The aim of this study was to analyze the evolution of the swimming science research based on the content analysis of the “Biomechanics and Medicine in Swimming” Proceeding books series from 1971 to 2006. The content of all the 622 papers published in the Proceeding books of the Symposiums of Biomechanics and Medicine in Swimming were evaluated. Two main categories were defined: (i) The “Aquatic activity” studied in each paper analyzed (included the sub-categories Competitive swimming, Water Polo, Synchronized Swimming, Diving, Hydrotherapy, Infant Swim, Head-out Aquatic Exercises, Fin Swimming and others) and; (ii) The main “scientific area” (including the sub-categories Biomechanics, Psychology, Sociology, Pedagogy/Teaching, Biochemistry, Physiology, Thermoregulation, Hydrodynamics, Electromyography, Anthropometry, Equipments/Methodologies, Clinical Medicine/Traumatology and Interdisciplinary assessment) applied for the assessment. There was an increasing number of papers published within the period of time analyzed (ranging from 23 papers in 1971 to 145 manuscripts in 2006). Comparing the sub-categories related to “Aquatic activity” the one with more research done was clearly the “competitive swimming” (ranging from 78.8 % in 1971 to 100 % in 1996). In the last decade there is a slight but increasing interest in “head-out aquatic exercises” (e.g....

This is a brief report of a research project, coordinated by me and funded by the Portuguese Government. It studies ‘The Representation of the Feminine in the Portuguese Press’ (POCI/COM 55780/2004), and works on the content analysis of discourse on the feminine in various Portuguese newspapers, covering the time span of February 1st till April 30th 2006. The paper is divided into two parts: in the first part, I will briefly discuss the typology used to code the text units of selected articles; in the second part, I will explore the most expressive percentages of the first two weeks of February for the content analysis of the Diário de Notícias newspaper. These percentages were obtained with the NVivo 6 qualitative data treatment software programme.

Foram analisadas as revistas Estadunidenses TIME, The New Yorker e Popular Science, e as revistas brasileiras Veja e Superinteressante.

Oomycetes comprise a diverse group of organisms that morphologically resemble fungi but belong to the stramenopile lineage within the supergroup of chromalveolates. Recent studies have shown that plant pathogenic oomycetes have expanded gene families that are possibly linked to their pathogenic lifestyle. We analyzed the protein domain organization of 67 eukaryotic species including four oomycete and five fungal plant pathogens. We detected 246 expanded domains in fungal and oomycete plant pathogens. The analysis of genes differentially expressed during infection revealed a significant enrichment of genes encoding expanded domains as well as signal peptides linking a substantial part of these genes to pathogenicity. Overrepresentation and clustering of domain abundance profiles revealed domains that might have important roles in host-pathogen interactions but, as yet, have not been linked to pathogenicity. The number of distinct domain combinations (bigrams) in oomycetes was significantly higher than in fungi. We identified 773 oomycete-specific bigrams, with the majority composed of domains common to eukaryotes. The analyses enabled us to link domain content to biological processes such as host-pathogen interaction, nutrient uptake...

The regulation of transcription initiation is a complex phenomenon, involving DNA-binding activator and repressor proteins, histones and chromatin factors, histone-modifying enzymes, and the general transcription apparatus. Though many of the genes encoding these factors have been identified in yeast, the role they play in regulating the expression of the yeast genome was not known. Genome-wide expression analysis of mutations in the Rpbl subunit of RNA polymerase II, the Srb4 subunit of Srb/Mediator complex, and the Kin28 subunit of TFIIH demonstrated that these factors are required for the transcription of essentially all protein-coding genes in yeast. However, other components of the Srb/Mediator complex (Srb5, Med6, SrblO, Swi2), the general transcription factor TFIID (Taf145, Taf17), and the SAGA histone-modifying complex (Gcn5, Taf17) were found not to be required for the transcription of all yeast genes but for distinct subsets of genes, revealing a surprising level of gene-specific regulation by the general transcription apparatus. The packaging of histones and DNA into nucleosomes was thought to generally repress gene expression, particularly at yeast telomeres, where the Sir protein complex silences genes located in the telomeric heterochromatin. To test this model...

This thesis focuses on micro devices aimed at rapid analysis of cells and subcellular organelles. These devices take advantage of microfabrication techniques to create environment suitable for biomechanical and biochemical stimulation of cells, to break cell membranes to extract the intracellular materials, and to separate or concentrate organelles and proteins of interest. These procedures greatly reduce the amounts of samples and reagents necessary and the process time required from their macro counterparts. Moreover, they demonstrate operational advantages, such as lower voltages, less heating, and no significant gas formation in electrolysis, over their macroscopic counterparts. First in line of the process stream are a series of microfluidic devices developed for the purpose of studying cell adhesion on biomaterials. Numerical models are developed to aid the quantitative analysis of fluid shear stresses on cells in these devices. The experimental results demonstrate that these devices are capable of capturing ligand-density-dependent, shear-dependent, and growth-factor-dependent adhesion behavior of cell cultures. Next, two electrical microfluidic devices are developed for the purpose of cell lysis and organelle separation. Both devices are fabricated using electroplating techniques to create three-dimensional electrodes...

Essay One: Explaining the Start and Fizzle of Organizational Change: Co-evolving Process and Content The theme that sustaining efforts to change is difficult appears in many guises throughout the organizations. The tendency for change processes to run out of energy and momentum is widely recognized. In this essay, I offer an inductive study of the dynamics of organizational change that describes situated human interactions to explain the observed trajectory of organizational behavior. As a window through which to view change, I study a manufacturer adopting production practices based on concepts of lean manufacturing and the so-called Toyota Production System (TPS). I develop a grounded theory based on extensive fieldwork observing a change effort that began with temporary improvement but subsequently entered a phase of decline, the characteristic start and fizzle of change. I examine how the actions of various groups interact with each other and with characteristics of the workplace. I then induce a model that characterizes the dynamics of participatory change. The model draws on a close examination of how people do the work of process improvement to identify a set of mechanisms through which process and content interact to constitute the patterns of organizing that result. I find that front-line participation led workers to generate ideas...

Articular cartilage tissue engineering is a useful tool to study and enhance the wound healing processes of articular cartilage in vivo. Current tissue engineering scaffolds for articular cartilage are produced by cross-linking type II collagen with glycosaminoglycans (GAG), creating pores in the resulting construct, and then seeding these pores with chondrocytes (articular cartilage producing cells). However, little information is known regarding the effect of cross-linking on the composition of the tissue that is produced by the chondrocytes, i.e. the relative quantity of GAG and type II collagen produced. In this study, I describe a method for the quantitative analysis of glycosaminoglycans in chondrocyte-seeded articular cartilage scaffolds with varied cross-linking density. Unlike other methods for determining GAG content, which digest the tissue sample (DMMB assay), my methodology accurately assesses the GAG ,content in stained histological tissue sections, therefore allowing the researcher to study tissue morphology. After identifying a parameter to quantify the intensity of red color in the tissue sections, the method was applied to the quantification of GAG distribution in samples of natural and engineered cartilage cultured for two weeks in vitro.; (cont.) These values were then compared with biochemically determined values for validity. In conclusion...

Leptin is secreted by adipocytes and exerts its effects by interacting with the long form of the leptin receptor, OB-RB. The leptin protein and leptin receptors have been localized in the ovary, and acute leptin treatment directly inhibits ovulation in the rat ovary. It was hypothesized that expression of the leptin receptor gene varies throughout the oestrous cycle to modulate the sensitivity of the ovary to leptin. In this study, expression of genes for the long and short isoforms of the leptin receptor in the adult ovary was investigated at different stages of the rat oestrous cycle. Vaginal cytology was used to determine the stage of the oestrous cycle. Ovaries were collected and RNA was extracted for real-time RT-PCR analysis of leptin receptor gene expression. OB-RB gene expression was low in pro-oestrus (3.13 +/- 0.18 fg RNA per microg total DNA) and dioestrus II (2.52 +/- 0.19 fg RNA per microg total DNA) of the oestrous cycle, whereas expression was high in oestrus (5.9 +/- 0.27 fg RNA per microg total DNA) and dioestrus I (4.6 +/- 0.24 fg RNA per microg total DNA) (P < 0.001). Expression of the gene for the short form of the leptin receptor (OB-RA) was at a maximum in dioestrus I (65.5 +/- 0.8 fg RNA per ng total DNA), high in oestrus (39.0 +/- 0.8 fg RNA per ng total DNA) and low at pro-oestrus (5.0 +/- 0.2 fg RNA per ng total DNA) and dioestrus II (1.1 +/- 0.09 fg RNA per ng total DNA) (P < 0.001). Plasma oestradiol concentrations (pg ml-1) were highest at pro-oestrus (19.38 +/- 1.3)...

A functional statistical analysis of a data panel constituted by 33 companies in the IBEX-35, Spain, during the period 2006 to 2009, is achieved for the investigation of possible changes in the dividend policy. Empirical evidence of positive functional correlation of dividend policy changes with future changes of earnings per share is provided by the data panel studied. The functional estimation of the dividend annual increment per share, in all the companies of the sample, is obtained by implementing a functional version of Kalman filtering algorithm in an Autoregressive Hilbertian (ARH(1)) process framework.

Background: Local adaptation of guidelines may increase compliance with guidelines that have been developed at a national level and are often not used in practice because of contextual factors. We have developed a representation scheme known as HieroGLIF, that facilitates a two-step approach to development and implementation of guidelines. In the first step, professional medical societies create a setting-independent guideline. In the second step, the guideline is adapted to local settings. The scheme represents the setting-independent guideline knowledge in a hierarchical structure for which we use axiomatic design theory to guide a top-down design. This representation extends the Guideline Interchange Format (GLIF), a frame-based ontology that has been previously developed for representation of guidelines. Methods: We encoded conventional national guidelines in the setting-independent format which were adapted to local clinical settings of their practice by primary care physicians (PCPs). We conducted a qualitative analysis of the type of changes that were made by the local adaptors. For each of the guidelines two patients' scenarios were created for which two sets of guideline recommendations were generated, one from the adapted hierarchical guideline and one from the conventional...

However, a comparable analysis of the Bacteroidetes, the third major bacterioplankton group, is still lacking. In the present paper, we report on the genome of Polaribacter sp. strain MED152. On the one hand, MED152 contains a substantial number of genes for attachment to surfaces or particles, gliding motility, and polymer degradation. This agrees with the currently assumed life strategy of marine Bacteroidetes. On the other hand, it contains the proteorhodopsin gene, together with a remarkable suite of genes to sense and respond to light, which may provide a survival advantage in the nutrient-poor sun-lit ocean surface when in search of fresh particles to colonize. Furthermore, an increase in CO2 fixation in the light suggests that the limited central metabolism is complemented by anaplerotic inorganic carbon fixation. This is mediated by a unique combination of membrane transporters and carboxylases. This suggests a dual life strategy that...

I report on an analysis of the alignment between the South African Grade 12 Physical Sciences core curriculum content and the exemplar papers of 2008, and the final examination papers of 2008 and 2009. A two-dimensional table was used for both the curriculum and the examination in order to calculate the Porter alignment index, which indicates the degree of match between the two. Alignment indices of 0.8 and 0.6 for Physics and Chemistry, respectively, were computed and remained constant for Physics, but fluctuated initially for Chemistry before levelling off. Using the revised Bloom's taxonomy, discrepancies were found in terms of cognitive levels as well as content areas in both Physics and Chemistry. The cognitive level Remember is under-represented in the Chemistry and Physics examinations, whereas the cognitive levels Understand and Apply were over-represented in Chemistry. It is argued that the shift to higher cognitive levels is in line with the reported increase in cognitive complexity of the Physical Sciences curriculum. The significance of the study for Physical Science teachers is highlighted, and the potential for further research is also indicated.

The publication of academic research is important for its contribution to the body of knowledge. A periodic analysis of journal content leads to the identification of research practices; while it also identifies the challenges that researchers face. The South African Journal of Economic and Management Sciences (SAJEMS) is considered to be one of the leading publications in the field of economic and managerial research in South Africa. The SAJEMS was selected as the unit of analysis; and a content analysis was conducted on 257 articles published during the seven-year period 2004 - 2010. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the input and output factors relating to published articles, including questions on authors and article content, such as the various methodological approaches. The findings revealed that there has been a decrease in co-authored articles during the period 2005 - 2008. Although the contribution by practitioners increased significantly in 2005 and 2008, the majority of the articles are still authored predominantly by academics. It is promising to see that international authors were involved in nearly 20 per cent of the articles contributed. When it came to the methodological approaches, the articles employed largely non-probability sampling designs. Furthermore...
