In the second consecutive election for the Brazilian Chamber ofDeputies, the majority of incumbents (75% in 1998 and again 75% in 2002) decided to run for reelection and at least 70% ofthem in both elections were successful, suggesting thus it would be incorrect to ignore static ambition as the main target of Brazilian legislators. It also raises doubts about the assertion that incumbents use their posts to pursue their post-Iegislative careers. However, this number also suggests that not alIlegislators seek reelection, indicating that it is also incorrect to assume alI of them are driven by similar motivations. In their attempts at career survival, incumbents may also run for higher offices (Senator, Governor, Vicegovernor). A minority still, may run for state leveI offices (regressive ambition).Given that static and progressive ambition are the two main types of career choice in Brazil, we focus on the factors that influence the career decision and electoral success of those who choose to run for reelection and those who choose to run for higher-level offices, i.e. senator and governor. We use data recently colIected from the 2002 elections.

Poster; Contextualized by individual experience (Dewey, 1938), the aim of this article is to describe the transformational ambition of university library actions concerning students (Allan, 2010). To do so, an in-depth reflection on the concept of educational experience is conducted using narrative research (Clandinin & Connelly, 2000). University space, subjective experience and sociality in university libraries create a conceptual framework using different kinds of texts and analyses. The aim is to show how information literacy can be used to contribute to the academic development of university students, highlighting the theoretical understandings proposed by Bruce (1997; 2003; 2004). Information skills, considered transversal, contribute decisively to what is expected of the individual after graduation, putting them to use in a labor context, also in transformation (Weaver, 2008). In this sense we can expect librarians’ collaboration, training students in the information literacy context, using “real life” situations concerning the need for information, to enable in-depth learning. Learning takes place in a university campus, within which academic libraries are part of a possible response to the challenges posed by teachers and counselors. The challenged students seek solutions through multiple means available...

We reflect on remarkable accomplishments in global tuberculosis (TB) control and identify persistent obstacles to the successful elimination of TB from the United States and globally. One hundred and twenty nine years after Koch’s discovery of the etiologic agent of TB, this health scourge continues to account for 9.4 million cases and 1.7 million deaths annually worldwide. Implementation of the Directly Observed Treatment Short-course strategy from 1995 through 2009 has saved 6 million lives. TB control is increasingly being achieved in countries with high-income economies, yet TB continues to plague persons living in countries with low-income and lower-middle–income economies. To accelerate progress against the global effects of disease caused by TB and achieve its elimination, we must bridge 3 key gaps in implementation, knowledge, and ambition.

Several factors underline the issue of stress-related health among young highly educated women. Major societal changes might provide more new challenges with considerably changed and expanded roles than were expected by earlier generations, especially among women. The quantity of young women with higher education has also increased threefold in Sweden in less than two decades and there are a growing number of young women that hereby break with traditional gender positions and enter new occupational areas traditionally dominated by men. The research questions in the present study were: “What is the main concern, regarding stress and recovery, among young highly educated working women breaking with traditional gender positions and entering male-dominated occupational areas?” and “How do they handle this concern?” We conducted open-ended interviews with 20 informants, aged 23-29 years. The results showed that the synergy between highly ambitious individuals and a context overflowing with opportunities and demands ended up in the informants’ constantly striving to find a balance in daily life (main concern). This concern refers to the respondents experiencing a constant overload of ambiguity and that they easily became entangled in a loop of stress and dysfunctional coping behavior...

This study of human rights activism in Liberia shows how small-scale, peaceful advocacy for democracy and human rights can take place even in a resource-poor country where activists face considerable danger from repressive regimes. When repressive regimes manage to block mass campaigns, individually-led, small-scale, nonviolent resistance can take root. The study also looks at ways that policymakers can support such activism. Driven by courage, commitment to principled ideas such as human rights and democracy, and in some cases by political ambition, individual activists helped expose human rights abuses to the outside world, delegitimizing the regime and attracting international responses that eventually brought change. In Liberia, under the regimes of Samuel Doe (1980–90) and Charles Taylor (1997–2003), some journalists, lawyers, university students, academics, clergy, and others, with only minimal international support, risked personal safety to demand freedom of speech, assembly, and protection from arbitrary arrest and torture. The findings are based on some 60 in-depth interviews by the author, mostly with key activists from those periods, and on archival research.

Full text (Correspondence is 300 words). Lynch et al. (Nature 496, 293-294; 2013) are surely right to say that satellites are essential for monitoring deforestation under the REDD+ provisions of a future climate agreement; indeed the need to use remotely sensed and ground based data in combination for this purpose was formally recognized by decision of the United Nations Framework on Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC) of Parties in 2009. What seems less likely is that a comprehensive rapid response monitoring system will, as Lynch et al. hope, be enshrined in international law under the UNFCCC at the 19th Conference of Parties, in Warsaw later this year. Nature is perhaps not the appropriate place to debate national sovereignty concerns, but these would represent a significant barrier to putting in place such a proposal. Cloud is also a constraint on optical remote sensing although screening and compositing methods can help reduce its effects. Radar can penetrate cloud but in our view is not yet established as an operational means for the capture of changes to forest ecosystems in the suitably systematic and repeatable manner required for monitoring deforestation although may become operationally relevant in the future. As participants in these processes we disagree strongly with the suggestion that the outputs of Global Observation of Forest and Land Cover Dynamics Programme (GOFC-GOLD) or the Global Forest Observations Initiative (GFOI) lack ambition and an understanding of the potential of satellites. On the contrary the aim of these activities is show objectively and without bias in favour of one approach or another how remote sensing helps systematic global monitoring to make REDD+ a reality...

The Latin American political map, as it has been evolving, ofiFers US a curious change in the dictator's condition. Little by little, the openly anti democratic position has given rise to certain types of leaders that opérate under the dictatorial regime masked in several levéis of the institutional corruption. China's rapid development over the last few decades could almost be described as an 'economic miracle'. However, the trajectory of its economic development has also led to rising demand for energy resources, particularly oil. This has created significant problems for China- specifically, a reliance on imported oil, which is only going to increase. Thus, the Chinese government has turned to investing in Africa's vast, untapped resources in order to diversifY and secure its oil supplies. As these resources will need to be transported via critical sea lines of communication, China has turned its interests to developing an energy security strategy that will enable China's growth to continue, Simultaneously, it has been pursuing a program of naval modernisation, and is in the process of transforming it into a 'blue-water' navy. Together, these developments have attracted some international criticism that China is a military and economic threat that will ultimately destabilise the region. However, both China's investment strategies in Africa and navy modernisation efforts are motivated by energy security concerns and domestic political desires for increased international influence. The Chinese government seems to have staked their legitimacy on improving living standards for their people...

The structures, institutions, and legal framework of corporate governance are developed and administered by individuals whose behaviors are shaped by cultural and personal concepts of hope, ambition, greed, fear, uncertainty, and hubris, as well as by the social ethos. A problem arises when these influences do not conform to the regulatory prescriptions of corporate governance. This private sector opinion explores the dynamics of culture and corporate governance in India by calling attention to three areas where the clashes are strongest: related-party transactions, the promoter's or large shareholder's actions, and the board's nominations, deliberations, and effectiveness.

The work's purpose city counselors who ran for Congress (federal or state) of Rio Grande do Sul, in the elections of 2002, 2006 and 2010. Aims to identify: the size of the municipality in which exercise the office, parties to which they are linked, career characteristics that present (number of mandates exercised and positioning in the list for which competed in municipal elections), as well as results. It also intends to analyze how these variables operate individually or together and predispose Councilman to manifest this progressive ambition and get a certain result. As the proportion of councilors who achieve this goal is small, the study also turns to identify and analyze the continuity of the career of these characters, ie, the decisions taken and the results achieved in the next municipal elections in which he ran for Congress (in this case, 2004, 2008 and 2012); O trabalho tem por objeto os vereadores que concorreram a deputado (federal ou estadual) do Rio Grande do Sul, nas eleições de 2002, 2006 e 2010.

This paper presents an overview of the behavior of the profiles of power used by people working on projects. He argues, based on the observation that the human being itself is so changeable as the variability of personal ambition, which at one time may take one or more profiles in order to achieve what has been proposed and manipulated or left manipulated only under its own criteria in order to change / improve their personal circumstances. Unfolding Ambition: Strategic Candidacy Decisions in Senate Primary Elections

Theories of ambition have taught us that higher offices are valuable commodities to certain politicians, and under the right circumstances, the benefits of running for an office outweigh the associated risks. Yet some ambitious politicians emerge as candidates while others do not. In this dissertation, I present a Theory of Strategic Candidacy Decisions to explain how primary elections unfold. With new comprehensive data on the timing of candidacy decisions, I test several hypotheses regarding the determinants of electoral and fundraising success, the timing of strategic candidacy decisions, the interactions of prospective officeholders, and the impact of strategic retirements on primary races for the United States Senate. Using both qualitative and quantitative tools, including event history techniques to capture the complex dynamics of primaries, I find that potential candidates interact with one another and the unique political context within each race and emerge from the pool of potential candidates in systematic ways. In the end, the strategic behavior of ambitious politicians has implications for the slate of candidates available to the electorate and ultimately, on the quality of representation between legislators and constituents.

My thesis investigates the phenomenon of human aspiration in life and was conceived from the new perspective I have about myself and my pursuits in a foreign country. Originally from Korea, I relocated to the United States and during this time asked myself many questions to determine my goal. When I was young, adults would ask me about my future even though I was not yet old enough to think logically about such questions. "What do you want to be?" they would ask. "What is next?" These are common questions in my country. I assume there are many different reasons adults ask children these questions. For example, people might want to revisit the ambition, goals, and wishes they had for their own life plan through children's answers. In turn, my Korean heritage makes me question my direction as an artist and an individual, especially after I came to the USA. What are my ambitions? How can I achieve them? What is their personal significance? One of the characteristics that makes the human experience so unique is that we all share a longing for personal enrichment. The search for individual fulfillment is a deep-rooted pursuit within all of us and is not only approached in a variety of ways but also is a pursuit of various means of accomplishment. No matter how significant or superficial one's ambition might be...

This paper examines the relation between ambition, as a form of dynamic human capital, and the escalator role of high order metropolitan regions, as originally identified by Fielding (1989). It argues that occupational progression in such places particularly depends on concentrations both of people with more of this asset and of jobs offering preferential access to valued elements of tacit knowledge, interacting in thick, competitive labour markets. This is partially confirmed with analyses of BHPS data on long term progression showing that only the more ambitious gain from residence in the extended London region, and that they only progress faster there.
