Regional airports are important for the development of a European network of integrated air transport. The Bragança Regional Airport is not an exception to this statement and as it looks to increase its capacity and flexibility of aircraft operations the cost of developing the infrastructure becomes highly elevated hindering expansion projects. Regardless, an effort to enhance the actual service level is made where this document aims to provide an evaluation to the Airport Master Plan, focusing on the structural and geometrical characteristics of the airfield facilities. Further, to obtain lower grade improvements that will still promote its present situation with reduced costs. To support the assessment a series of international aviation standards and airport design recommendations were reviewed, highlighting those of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), to ensure the compliance of necessary requirements. A variety of airport design software was used to calculate adequate pavement thickness, also other parameters as the runway orientation which made possible to elaborate the proposed development alternatives. A impossibilidade da ampliação física suficiente para atender às perspectivas de crescimento da demanda de vôos em aeroportos como Congonhas (São Paulo), faz com que soluções alternativas para maior eficiência no processamento dos vôos sejam de grande interesse, destacando-se as soluções operacionais. Considerando-se a complexidade dos processos logísticos associados às operações aeroportuárias, a utilização da simulação em ferramentas de apoio à decisão permite a análise minuciosa do desempenho e eficiência do sistema de pátio de aeronaves. O objetivo principal dessa dissertação consiste em identificar os parâmetros e representar as operações do pátio em um modelo de simulação para análise do processo de atendimento das aeronaves e da influência de cada componente no seu tempo total. Esta dissertação discute as questões de acesso terrestre a aeroportos. Em particular, estima a influência do fator de variabilidade do tempo de viagem na escolha modal de acesso terrestre ao Aeroporto Internacional André Franco Montoro, em Guarulhos, Região Metropolitana da Cidade de São Paulo (RMSP). Para isso, foi aplicada uma pesquisa de preferência declarada com 108 viajantes aéreos, realizada nas salas de embarque do referido aeroporto. Foram entrevistados apenas residentes da RMSP e predominantemente viajantes aéreos internacionais. Foram coletados também dados revelados: dados do indivíduo, do acesso terrestre realizado e da sua viagem aérea. Para a coleta dos dados de preferência declarada foi elaborado um experimento fatorial ortogonal de escolha. Cada indivíduo era questionado a proceder à ordenação de conjuntos de 4 alternativas, uma para cada modo considerado: automóvel, táxi e o serviço de ônibus existente, e um novo serviço proposto, um trem expresso ligando o aeroporto ao centro da cidade de São Paulo. As alternativas foram descritas pelos atributos de custo, tempo de viagem médio e variabilidade do tempo de viagem, expressa através de uma margem de segurança. O Aeroporto Internacional Governador André Franco Montoro (GRU), São Paulo, depende inteiramente da água subterrânea para suprir sua demanda. Entretanto, a prática de extração excessiva, que aumenta continuamente para atender à demanda de um número cada vez maior de passageiros e às dificuldades envolvidas com a recarga natural do aqüífero, levou a Empresa Brasileira de Infraestrutura Aeroportuária (Infraero) a procurar outras fontes de abastecimento. Embora a busca de solução para o problema da escassez da água, passe pela opção de recarga gerenciada do aqüífero, a falta da experiência nacional nessa área restringe a tomada da decisão na adoção dessa prática no país. Com o aumento do tráfego aéreo no aeroporto de Ribeirão Preto - SP e o conhecimento de várias reclamações sobre o incômodo sonoro junto ao Ministério Público é apresentada uma análise, através de simulação computacional, de como ficou as curvas de ruído deste aeródromo. O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar como a população, que está no seu entorno, é afetada pela operação das aeronaves e qual o percentual a ser encontrado após a simulação realizada com o programa INM (Integrated Noise Model). A simulação indicou que o aumento das operações no Aeroporto Leite Lopes SBRP não ocasionou um impacto maior na população afetada dentro da área definida pela curva de 65 dB(A), ficando este valor dentro de parâmetros aceitáveis pelas normas adotadas. A velocidade e a direção dos ventos locais contribuem para o aumento do impacto ambiental, sugerindo a necessidade de alterar as rotas das aeronaves conforme ocorrerem estas mudanças meteorológicas. O estudo indicou a necessidade de alteração das rotas de pouso e decolagem. Orientar os pilotos através dos controladores de voo que pousos e decolagens sejam efetuados pela cabeceira da pista 36 (trinta e seis), prolongando o eixo de decolagem em mais 2 milhas náuticas ou 2 km. O tráfego aéreo brasileiro aumentou sensivelmente nos últimos anos e tem previsões de aumento acima da média mundial para as próximas duas décadas, chegando a 7,3% ao ano. Por outro lado, importantes aeroportos brasileiros já apresentam sinais de congestionamento e políticas de restrição são necessárias para manter os níveis de serviço oferecido às aeronaves e passageiros acima de um limite mínimo aceitável. Este trabalho apresenta uma metodologia baseada em modelos de simulação para analisar a capacidade do lado aéreo de aeroportos. Seu propósito é determinar o fluxo máximo de tráfego, mantendo o nível de serviço acima de um valor pré-definido, levando a atrasos aceitáveis para aeronaves aguardando na fila para decolagem. Para desenvolver o estudo, foi utilizado o software Visual SIMMOD e a metodologia apresentada foi aplicada ao Aeroporto de São Paulo Congonhas. Os resultados das simulações mostram que o aeroporto está saturado, com um volume de tráfego que leva a um nível de serviço inadequado. Para atingir um nível de serviço adequado, uma redução de tráfego é necessária. Being present on the airport retail environment forces companies to frame their strategies based on this industry particularities. Here there are very distinct characteristics from all the others retail environments such as, consumers’ schedules and culture. Portfolio is the largest retail space inside Lisbon’s international airport restrict zone. With more than 400 m2 this store offers consumers a selection of the best Portuguese products of all kind of industries. The store used to be alone just in front of the Lojas Francas de Portugal’s exit and it was one of the first stores that passengers saw after passing the airport’s security point. On July 2013, with the opening of a new commercial area, international competitors surrounded Portfolio. Besides new consumers passing by, the new commercial area was not giving Portfolio the expected revenues. It was time to define what was the next step to do. Executive Summary: Airport terminals curbsides are the critical interfaces between stand- ing vehicles, moving vehicles and pedestrians, acting as the capacity buffer between the road delivery system and the airport terminal building. Their design and capacity are essential to the successful performance of any airport infrastructure and, therefore, impact the quality of passenger experience. The current solution at Portela Airport for taxi service provision on the passengers arrival curbside consists on a set of two parallel lanes next to the door of the airport terminal, with four spots (two in each lane) for taxis to stop and pick up passengers. Its design turns the service of taxis in the same lane strongly linked, leading to the occurrence of blocking effects among taxis, which also reduces the utility of expanding the number of stop areas. A new solution for taxi service provision was recently proposed by Globalvia. The new service configuration consists of a “spine” parking design for 8 taxis at arrivals, and another one at departures with an identical geometry but for private cars. To estimate the impact of aldehyde emissions at an airport on the air quality, formaldehyde and acetaldehyde concentrations were measured in the idle and taxiway areas of the Santos-Dumont national airport in Rio de Janeiro. The airport is located about 1 km from downtown Rio de Janeiro and had an average of 70,000 landings and take-offs during 2007. A total of 129 samples were collected in the period from March to November 2007. Formaldehyde concentrations ranged from 2.6 to 10.3 µg m-3, and acetaldehyde concentrations ranged from 4.3 to 19.7 µg m-3. During the morning, A/F ratios (acetaldehyde/formaldehyde ratios, in mass units) were in the range 0.7-1.0. In the afternoon, formaldehyde concentrations were lower and acetaldehyde concentrations generally increased. Formaldehyde and acetaldehyde concentrations were in the same range than values previously published for downtown and may not affect ozone production in a local scale.

Assessing the effects of ownership structure on efficiency has received considerable attention in the aviation management literature. Commercialization has been widely employed both in developing and developed countries as a means of increasing operational efficiency. Since airports and seaports are operationally similar, this paper examines the literature and methods used to assess the effects of privatization in both types of infrastructure. We observe that the impact of privatization on performance depends not only on the degree of privatization but on the competition in the market. Following a 4-level specification commonly employed in the seaport literature that captures degrees of privatization, we estimate a stochastic frontier model for airport efficiency as a function of ownership. We conclude that airport authorities in the United States are equally as efficient as fully privatized airports elsewhere, due to a high degree of competition and fiscal independence from the other governmental entities. Additionally, while privatization may be an effective mechanism of introducing corporatization into infrastructures that are characterized by poor competition and direct government control, the airport authority appears to achieve the benefits of privatization in operation without actual transfer of ownership.

A simple, portable and useful collection of software tools has been developed for the analysis of airport surface traffic. The tools are based on a flexible and robust traffic-flow model, and include calibration, validation and simulation functionality for this model. Several different interfaces have been developed to help promote usage of these tools, including a portable Matlab‘ implementation of the basic algorithms; a web-based interface which provides online access to automated analyses of airport traffic based on a database of real-world operations data which covers over 250 U.S. airports over a 5-year period; and an interactive simulation-based tool currently in use as part of a college-level educational module. More advanced applications for airport departure traffic include taxi-time prediction and evaluation of “windowing” congestion control.

With the growing demand for air transportation and the limited ability to increase capacity at some key points in the air transportation system, there are concerns that in the future the system will not scale to meet demand. This situation will result in the generation and the propagation of delays throughout the system, impacting passengers’ quality of travel and more broadly the economy. This thesis proposes the investigation of the mechanisms by which the air transportation system has scaled to meet demand in the past and is expected to do so in the future using a multi-level engineering systems approach. The air transportation system was first analyzed at the U.S. national level using network abstractions. In order to investigate limits in scaling of the U.S. air transportation network, theories of scale-free and scalable networks were used. It was found that the U.S. air transportation network was not scale-free due to capacity constraints at major airports, also preventing it from being scalable. However, the construction and analysis of a new network for which sets of two or more significant airports that serve passenger traffic in a metropolitan region (i.e. multi-airport systems) were aggregated into single nodes showed that it was scale-free and scalable. These results were also supported by a time series analysis of airport and multi-airport system growth. These analyses demonstrated the importance of regional level scaling mechanisms (i.e. development of multi-airport systems) in the ability of the air transportation system to adapt and scale to meet demand.

During the 1990s private sponsors have participated in projects involving eighty-nine airports in twenty-three developing countries, with investment totaling US$5.4 billion. About three-fifths of this investment was carried out in 1998 alone, and about two-fifths related to the award of the Argentine airport system that year. Analysis of the investment patterns shows that Latin America leads in attracting private investors, operations and management contracts with major capital expenditure have been the main vehicle for investment, and governments are transferring networks to the private sector more often than single airports or stand-alone facilities.

This thesis examines the formal and programmatic expansion of one of the most efficient generic spaces, the international airport hub, by serving the specific needs of an increasingly common mobile citizen, the medical tourist. International airport hubs are comprised of a network of interlinked corridors where large transient populations are received, held and then dispersed again. The medical tourist is a product of the rapidly increasing cost and specialization associated with medical treatment procedures. Recognizing that the density of airport hubs now rivals that of contemporary city centers, this project expands the capacity of the international airport hub, thus enabling the airport to compete for citizens in a manner similar to cities. As one iteration of a potential airport expansion system that could serve multiple mobile citizen types, this project exploits the security requirements of an existing airport and an innovative program to hypothesize a new type of airport terminal.

This study on airports highlights the need for a more comprehensive and accurate understanding of the interactions between these urban facilities and the development of cities and regions, considering the different regional contexts in Brazil. It also suggests using monitoring and management systems as well as planning tools to be applied to these interactions. To support the analysis and help understand these issues, this article presents a survey of São Jose dos Campos Airport and how it interacts with the city and with urban and regional development in the Paraíba Valley, state of São Paulo. This article also graphically illustrates how the sprawling São Jose dos Campos gradually surrounded its airport and maps show the environmental impact of air and airport traffic on the city. The main purpose of this article is to analyse the relationships between the planning process of the new Lisbon airport (NLA) and several planning instruments, both territorial (regional and local) and sectorial (transportation and road), during the nume­rous iterations in the NLA planning process. At the end of the 1960s, Portuguese authorities pondered the need of a new airport to replace the existing one at Portela. A number of loca­tions were suggested during the planning process. Several of them were invalidated over time due to urban development or to the constraints imposed by environmental laws. This paper analyses the various planning instruments in place from 1960 until 2010 and their relationship with the planning process of NLA. The airport relocation decision is not closed yet. The documents drafted in the 1960s and 1970s reflect the dominant planning paradigms with a top-down approach strongly driven by the public administration. During the 1990s the procedure was resumed and in 2005, a new phase started with a strong influence of external stakeholders. However, due to the 2010 crisis the process was suspended. The regional planning of the last decades never revealed the ability to drive the NLA process. Indeed, the decisions concerning the airport relocation have strongly influenced the spatial planning process
