It is widely recognised that a country’s development, in terms of innovation and productivity, is greatly influenced by the character and intensity of interaction between the science and business communities. Despite this importance, there is still a lack of understanding regarding the underlying factors that drive the transfer of knowledge and technology. In particular, only a few empirical studies have addressed the issue of exploring the attitudes and behaviours of academic staff in this process. This paper aims to fill this research caveat. Its main objective is to investigate the influence of academic staff’s socio-demographic and educational characteristics on university-industry collaboration. According to our objectives and to test these hypotheses, we decided on a mixed method. At a first stage, we performed a quantitative study, based on data gathered from a questionnaire applied to the overall population of academic staff at Bragança Polytechnic Institute in Portugal. The empirical study was carried out in 2011 and covered the total population of academic staff at BPI. We received 123 valid questionnaires, yielding a response rate of 23.7%. For data analysis, we applied descriptive statistics and logistic regression. At a second stage...

The processes of transformation that contemporary societies are now going through have contributed to the reconfiguration of and stress in the different realities of work and of the professions. In Portugal, during the last few decades it has been proved to be true that the different constitutional governments tended to legislate for reforms concerning the structure of the central administration. In the educational field, these political measures were expressed in countless decrees and standards, which have had repercussions on the lives of schools and teachers. New regimes were proposed like professional reclassification and reconversion (2008) and, more recently, the loss of teaching posts by mutual consent and the requalification of the workers, who were surplus in public services and bodies (2013). An investigation will be carried out in which the principal objective is the understanding of what teachers think about the impact of these policies on their work and on the (re)construction of their professional identity, thus permitting a wider understanding of what it is to be a teacher today. The investigation is of a qualitative nature with recourse to biographical narratives and documental research. This article will focus on a revision of the literature concerning the theme...

Institutions of Higher Education can provide, in their internal environment, entrepreneurial learning opportunities for students stimulating new attitudes and behaviours towards entrepreneurship. The Portuguese universities have diversified their strategies to promote formal, informal and non formal entrepreneurial learning that can be encouraged in various strategies. The participation of key actors and stakeholders involved in awareness, mentoring and project implementation of the entrepreneurial learning process is crucial for collaborating work in a competitive world. Moreover, obtaining employment is increasingly dependent on not only the potentials of individuals, but also, and even more, the ability to build solid networks of partnerships in science and innovation and employment. Within the scope of the ongoing project "Entrepreneurial Learning, Cooperation and the Labour Market: Good Practice in Higher Education" this paper aims to highlight the importance of non formal and informal learning and to contribute to the reflection regarding added value of inter organizational cooperation and collaborative work.

Since the mid-1990s, there has been an explosion of books, journal and magazine articles, workshops and conference presentations about the multigenerational workplace. Writers such as David Foot (Boom, Bust and Echo), Ron Zemke et al. (Generations at Work), and others have delved into the challenges of bringing together individuals from different generations with very different values and ways of looking at their work. Typically, it is suggested that there is an inevitable clash between the generations, particularly between baby boomers and next generation, that needs to be managed by employers. Academic libraries throughout North America have multiple generations of librarians in their employ. For example, a major survey of libraries across Canada in 2005 showed that in academic libraries, librarian complements were divided approximately 25-25-50, with 25% being “Recent Professional Librarian Entrants” (defined as librarians with less than 6 years of professional experience), 25% being “Mid-Career Librarians” (6 – 15 years of professional experience) and 50% “Senior” Librarians (more than 15 years’ experience). (From The Future of Human Resources in Canadian Libraries. http://www.ls.ualberta.ca/8rs/8RsFutureofHRLibraries.pdf.) It is reasonable to assume that the same challenges and opportunities exist in a multigenerational work environment in academic libraries just as in any other. At the same time...

PURPOSE Research suggests that for many cancer survivors, returning to work has a range of benefits. However, considerable barriers have been identified as influencing the quality of return to work outcomes. This study explored the perspectives of Australian cancer survivors, managers and employee assistance program (EAP) professionals to gain an understanding of the return to work process and factors that affect the experience. METHODS Focus groups and interviews were conducted with cancer survivors (n = 15), managers (n = 12), and EAP professionals / psychologists (n = 4) from public and private sectors. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data to identify common and unique themes from the three participant groups. RESULTS A range of drivers were identified including maintaining normality and regaining identity, which could act positively or negatively depending on survivors’ coping ability and self awareness. Analysis revealed communication difficulties in the workplace that impact on emotional and practical support. Negotiating an employee’s return is complex, influenced by the level of consultation with the employee and use of an ad hoc or structured process. Direct and indirect ways of supporting employees with cancer were identified...

Work-family conflict has become an issue of particular concern to today???s businesses. Its prevalence among employees and the negative consequences of this conflict for one???s job satisfaction has led it to become one of the problems that managers and directors have to deal with most. Although there have been researches into the relationship between work-family conflict and job satisfaction, few studies have analysed the role of gender in this relationship. The objectives of this study are to analyse the moderating role of gender and the salience of family and work roles in the work-to-family conflict and general job satisfaction, while the job???s characteristics are controlled. 162 workers from a Spanish public organisation took part in the study. The results from the regression analysis confirms the moderating effect of gender on the relationship between work-to-family conflict and job satisfaction, such that women show a lower level of job satisfaction than men. However, the salience of the family and work roles were not found to have a moderating effect on the aforementioned relationship, neither in the case of men nor in women. The results are discussed in the context of the theory of role identity salience and the gender role theory...

The study examined attitudes toward work-life balance (WLB) using survey data from 292 employees in an Australian university. Organisational culture, as it relates to how and when employees can use WLB initiatives, was investigated. In particular, the study examined employees' differing perceptions of organisational culture within a single organisation, with particular reference to: managerial support of WLB initiatives, career consequences of using WLB initiatives, organisational time expectations that may interfere with nonwork activities, and the level of employee control over workload and when employees can take time off. As predicted, perceptions of managerial support of WLB initiatives were related to initiative use; however, overall initiative use was not related to perceived career consequences (e.g. using initiatives will damage one's career progress), organisational time expectations (e.g., long working hours), or levels of employee control (e.g., employee control over workload). Results showed that perceptions of a supportive organisational culture were positively related to organisational commitment and negatively related to work-life conflict and employees' intentions to leave. Further, the study results show that employees' perception of organisational culture was more strongly associated with the outcomes (e.g....

At a more technological and literate society statistics play a relevant role in order to allow people becoming critical and active citizens. Statistics is part of our daily life. Most media refer to statistical knowledge showing graphs, tables or means in order to sound scientifically supported and to be able to manipulate people’s opinion about what is going on in the world. Choosing the information one reads, analysing it, processing data and deciding different ways of presenting them are some of the competencies that we need to develop and mobilize. School practices play an essential role in the access pupils will have, or not, to these forms of literacy so deeply needed in a complex, changing and multicultural society. Nowadays most international and Portuguese policy documents refer that school should provide the means to develop each pupil’s competencies, namely the ones related to communication and to participant citizenship. Collaborative work is also suggested in many of them, namely related to statistical contents. Piaget and Vygotsky (Tryphon and Vonèche, 1996) underlined the role of communication in knowledge appropriation and in pupils’ performances. Social interaction, namely peer ones, played a main role in the process and could be seen as a facilitator when used within an innovative and coherent didactic contract (César...

This paper suggests that it is the best and worst of times for academic work. It is the best of times because there are more academics publishing than ever before. It is the worst of times because there is much unnecessary publication. Working in the competitive conditions of academic capitalism, academics feel impelled to keep publishing, whether or not they have anything to say. The pressures to publish continually and to promote one’s own approach are reflected in the way that social scientists are writing. Academics use a noun-based technical language, which is less precise than ordinary language. Postgraduates are taught this way of writing as a precondition for entering the social sciences. In this way, the nature of academic capitalism not only determines the conditions under which academics are working but it affects the way that they are writing.; Este artículo sugiere que esta época es la mejor y peor para la labor académica.

Indonesian Studies as a field is strongly influenced by its own social character as a community of competing and cooperating scholars. Outside individual universities, the dominant social form is not the powerful professor, but rather the "circle of esteem," a cluster of scholars who respect each other, cite each other's work, push each other's ideas into the academic marketplace, and, occasionally, rise to each other's defense. Circles of esteem arise because academic work has less to do with the industrial production of knowledge than with a constant search for novelty, which may arise from new sources or new uses of sources. Although novelty is prized, the value of new work is hard to judge, and it will be more easily accepted when backed by a circle of esteem. There are two effective ways to gain academic prestige outside a circle of esteem. The first is to write a standard work, a conservative strategy to create a work that will become citation fodder for others. The second way is to coin a "euphoric couplet," which is an unexpected adjective-noun combination encapsulating a previously elusive analytical truth. Euphoric couplets are easy to remember, dissociated from theory, and intriguingly ambiguous.

This paper reports the outcomes of a study, undertaken from a phenomenographic perspective, of university academics' experiences of their own growth and development, i.e., what it means to them, what they are trying to achieve, how they go about it, why they do things that way ... The outcomes presented are based on a series of interviews with teaching and research academics at a research intensive university. The group as a whole showed a range of views of academic development, representing in particular a varying focus on: Academic performance, in terms of increasing work output, academic standing or work quality; Personal learning, in terms of ongoing accumulation of new knowledge and skills or increasing depth of understanding in one's field of study; Disciplinary or social change, in terms of contributions to one's field of study or a relevant social community. Implications for our understanding of academic development and academic work are discussed.

The assessment of academic work cannot be reduced to the measures. But there is an extensive “naturalization” of procedures that are not driven every respect constituting this “evaluation”. One aspect of this “naturalization has been slow and subtle substitution of debate and criticism of academic studies for its simple display, publication or presentation with examination more administrative than academic. The “peer reviews” has been a requirement with problems. They include the anonymity of the appraiser and it allows many “deviations” for an assessment of political, ideological or even personal. The tendency toward hegemony of groups is one of the problems. The recent proliferation of academic societies (or scientific), academic or professional journals, the publication requirements (number of titles) as a criterion for contests, promotions, financial aid or scholarships has increased the bureaucracy to administer it with a possible prejudice to the existing distortions to the development of Science.; La evaluación del trabajo académico no puede reducirse a medidas. Un aspecto de esta evaluación ha sido la sustitución del debate y de la crítica por su exhibición, simple publicación o presentación con una especie de examen más administrativo que académico. The paper presents a meaningful learning tool known as Gowin's V and highlights the possibility of using it in the process of unpacking academic work in nursing. Our study aims to propose an amendment to this tool using the elements that comprise the procedural trajectory of the Theory of Nursing Praxis Intervention in Collective Health (TIPESC) and to analyze a dissertation produced in this field. This descriptive and exploratory study presents Gowin's V and proposes changes to its methodology. It thus shows the possibility of using this heuristic instrument to analyze academic work in nursing. Gowin's V has already proven to be useful in supporting teaching and learning processes and analyzing academic work in the area through its ability to capture and interpret any phenomenon articulated in the processes of social production and reproduction.; El artículo presenta una herramienta de Aprendizaje Significativo denominada V de Gowin y su posible utilización en un proceso de desempaquetado de producciones académicas de Enfermería. The article tries to render policies, concept and practices problematic, as well as evaluation of high education that have been introduced in Brazil, especially from 1990 decades on. The different modalities and evaluation mechanisms mean significant changes in academic culture, in teaching, in institutions administration, in curricular definitions, and mainly in thestructure of high education. The study has evaluated the policy and ethical meaning that support theorical-conceptual guidelines of evaluation that has been introduced in the country. It presumes that the appraised estimate proposal, in real qualitative outlook should make clear the answer to the nuclear question: “What is evaluation good for?” In this sense, it is argued that evaluation should perform the proposal for contributing to conceivewell-turned judgement and to make decisions that will fall upon improvement of development process of the IES, that is, to follow a methodological way to allow changes in its construction process and even in the systematic institutional evolution itself, considering the quality of academic work and IES administration.; O artigo busca problematizar as políticas, concepções e práticas de avaliação da educação superior que vêm sendo implementadas no Brasil...
