The purpose of this study is to understand how public school teachers experienced the beginning of their profession, and to analyze the concrete conditions of such work within the historical cultural context in which it happened. In order to do so...

In the name of the certification of ‘quality’ and ‘excellence’, the University of Minho now seems condemned only to carry out procedures which, in education and research, certify routine and conformity, efficiency and utility, thus confirming the hegemony of instrumental reason. It is, however, my purpose in this study to reflect on academic freedom in the university. This issue demands that one should address one’s questions to the nature of the university itself, to the academic profession, as well as to its vocation and mission. What is the university today? What are the forces that traverse it? What blows has it sustained? What are the threats it is exposed to? What are its contradictions? What demands must it comply with? What should its response be?

The study is based on two fundamental premises: firstly the reconfiguration of the academic profession under the influence of policies and secondly, university teachers, as important social actors in policy implementation, are not passive individual. By giving voice to teachers, the study focuses on understanding how they experience changes in academic work and respond to the policies, what strategies they adopt to deal with constraints, their modes to be in the profession, the dilemmas they face and the strategies they use to respond. The documental research was focused on documents related to Higher Education, the Bologna Process, International Reports, documents guiding the policies of Higher Education in Brazil and Summary on Higher Education Census in Brazil...

Understanding how institutional changes within academia may affect the overall potential of science requires a better quantitative representation of how careers evolve over time. Because knowledge spillovers, cumulative advantage, competition, and collaboration are distinctive features of the academic profession, both the employment relationship and the procedures for assigning recognition and allocating funding should be designed to account for these factors. We study the annual production ni(t) of a given scientist i by analyzing longitudinal career data for 200 leading scientists and 100 assistant professors from the physics community. Our empirical analysis of individual productivity dynamics shows that (i) there are increasing returns for the top individuals within the competitive cohort, and that (ii) the distribution of production growth is a leptokurtic “tent-shaped” distribution that is remarkably symmetric. Our methodology is general, and we speculate that similar features appear in other disciplines where academic publication is essential and collaboration is a key feature. We introduce a model of proportional growth which reproduces these two observations, and additionally accounts for the significantly right-skewed distributions of career longevity and achievement in science. Using this theoretical model...

Thesis (Ed. D.)--University of Rochester. Margaret Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development, 2009.; Evangelical institutions of higher education began introducing programs of social work education after 1960 during a period of academic reform and dramatic social change. Public dialogue increasingly acknowledged impoverishment as a reality in America, and the renewal of social concern among evangelicals stimulated interest in education for the social work profession. At the same time, the profession of social work was reorganizing and mobilizing to educate social workers for thousands of new social service jobs. An unlikely intersection of purposes brought evangelicals and social workers together in service to the needs of society. Considering the secular stance of the social work profession and the reticence of evangelicals to engage with social issues for two generations, the development of programs of social work education in evangelical institutions presents a surprising phenomenon ripe for examination. Employing historical case study method, two questions guide the research. First, why and how were programs of social work education established in evangelical institutions of higher education between 1960 and 1985? Second...

Implementation of follow-up studies of former students is an efficient way to supervise the entire process of professional training and curriculum evaluation and guide representative councils on policies for the dental profession. The aim of this study was to identify professional profiles subgroups based on job-related variables and perception about profession in a sample of former students of a Brazilian public dental school the School of Dentistry of the Federal University of Goias, who graduated between 1988 and 2007. Academic and professional data were gathered from obtained from the University Registrar s Office and the Federal Council of Dentistry, respectively. A web-based password protected questionnaire about job-related variables and perception about profession was sent individually by e-mail to the former students using a software manager. Descriptive and cluster analysis (Two-step cluster), between-groups comparison and multiple logistic regression were used for data analysis. Answer rate was 53.0, predominantly female (64.9%) and mean age was 34-years (SD=6.0). Automatic selection of optimal number of clusters included 289 cases (89.8%) in 3 natural clusters. Clusters 1, 2 and 3 included 52.2, 30.8 and 17.0% of the sample...

A profession basically includes two components: scientific skills and professional values...

For middle-income and developing countries as well as some industrial nations a major challenge for building and sustaining successful research universities is determining the mechanisms that allow those universities to participate effectively in the global knowledge network on an equal basis with the top academic institutions in the world. These research universities provide advanced education for the academic profession, policy makers, and public and private sector professionals involved in the complex, globalized economies of the 21st century. In addition to their contribution to economic development, these universities play a key societal role by serving as cultural institutions, centers for social commentary and criticism, and intellectual hubs. The positive contribution of tertiary education is increasingly recognized as not limited to middle-income and advanced countries, because it applies equally to low-income economies. Tertiary education can help these countries to become more globally competitive by developing a skilled...

Currently a number of countries around the world grapple with the alleged issues of “brain drain” and “brain gain”. These twin areas are especially felt in smaller nations such as Australia. They are particularly the subject of analysis with respect to the academic profession, which seeks to recruit the next generation of academics in an increasingly global and competitive world. Academic migration itself is not a new issue being as old as the profession itself. What perhaps is novel is that in a mass system of higher education with a great diversity of institutional types migration and migration decisions are even less one-dimensional than perhaps they once, if ever, were. If ever academic migrants were motivated only by academic decisions in making their migration choices does this also apply to those who work in newer and less traditional universities. This study using life history methods examines academic migrants and their migration choices with reference to two new Australian universities. The data is related to the wider literature on recent migration studies and academic migration. Questions are posed and conclusions drawn for academic recruitment by universities facing the challenges posed by imminent large-scale retirement of academic staff; Anthony Potts

This article presents a review of the new policies of teacher professionalization derived from the new scenario of higher education in the world. The fragmentation of the academic profession, the new roles associated to the management of research, and the role of knowledge in universities, are cornerstones of the discussion which is arising. Finally, the present article addresses the specific scenario of the situation in Europe, and the sharpening of contradictions in academic professionalization, derived from the paradoxes in which Higher Education Institutions operate in the region.

This chapter explores the migration decisions and motives of a group of academics who were recruited to three Australian higher education institutions during the period 1965–2003. The chapter furthers our understanding of historical patterns of academic mobility and the experience of academic mobility and adds to our understanding of the academic profession. The research used a micro approach to migration history and focussed on academic migrants’ decision-making processes. The research used semi-structured interviews with three groups of academics who were interviewed in 1982 and 2003. The academic migrants in this research were not committed to any particular institution or curriculum. What was most important in their migration decision was simply obtaining any academic position. Many, if not most of them, owed their academic careers to the growth in Australian higher education caused by its transition from an elite to a mass system. They obtained their academic posts because of the global nature of academic work. The question that arises from this study is what Australian universities will need to do to attract a new generation of academics as they compete in a global market for academic personnel.; Anthony Potts

When a person embarks upon a professional scientific career, what features define their training process? How is this process related to scientific practice and, in general, its development within the organisational setting of the R&D system? The changes affecting contemporary science since the late 20th century mirror several characteristic features of the scientific profession, namely the working conditions of scientists, how professional careers are organised, the way in which scientific work is assessed and how scientists are trained in the academic world. Researchers in academic science today are faced with far-reaching reforms which are currently taking place in universities and official research centres; changes which respond to the growing complexity in the organisation of scientific work and the pressures of science and university policy. Insofar as traditional researchers were considered academic workers, scientists in the public sector must now satisfy the organisational requirements of disciplines and institutions alike. This changing situation has affected the way in which new scientists are recruited and trained and the rôle played by both the doctoral thesis and the young researcher in scientific groups. These changes have also had repercussions for new researchers in their process of socialisation ...

Introduction. The research was framed in the context of the transformation of work, especially the located in the academy. Their focus was the analysis of the configuration of the meaning of work and the sense of the profession in a group of Colombian university teachers. It was conducted in two parts: a theoretical framework and an empirical study. The first was to construct a general approach to work and a description of changes in their conditions of implementation, as well as their relationship with the labor wellbeing. On this basis, it was analyzed the metamorphosis of the university, especially the emergence of academic-capitalism, and also their impact on the meaning of work and the sense of the profession of teaching and research, understood in terms of academic professionalism. Method. Quantitative data were collected through a questionnaire assessing working conditions, workload, work wellbeing, burnout and engagement: for empirical study, a mixed design that allowed the combination of different data collection techniques applied. This questionnaire was administered to groups of teachers from various Colombian universities chosen by criterion of theoretical representativeness. The way academics construct professional identities and operate in a complex profession that is under pressure depends on how they position themselves in relation to institutional cultures. In order to investigate faculty representations of academic life, a survey case study (questionnaire and interviews) focusing on potential dissonance between institutional and personal values was conducted at the University of Minho (Braga-Portugal), a research-teaching university. Dissonance was found related to teaching, research, working climate, relationships and leadership, suggesting a person-organization misfit. Dissatisfaction arising from values incongruence co-exists with efforts for self-fulfilment as academics struggle to preserve their identity while realizing that institutional priorities may run counter to their ideals. Acknowledging dissonance as a vital element within a culture of respect for diversity would foster the negotiation of understandings about what the academic community is and might be. Institution-specific inquiry into academic experience should not only be expanded but also become part of the strategic (re)definition of institutional development policies.

Suid-Afrikaanse akademici huldig 'n kollektiewe waardestelsel.
