No entanto...

The huge development of science and technology and the political, social and economic changes that characterize post-modern societies, demand from education systems a quality formation for all citizens. The great challenge of the XXI century in education is not only to ensure the acquisition of a range of varied and current competencies, but also to guarantee the quality of learning. Therefore, the quality of education is a major concern to governments, politicians, academics and researchers and has been an issue widely discussed in scientific meetings and studied in several education research programs in different countries in the Western world. The results of research on education quality show a positive correlation between students’ academic performance and education quality. However, we must go further, it is necessary to research quality indicators, to understand how students perceive education quality. In order to achieve these goals, we developed an exploratory study with students from different higher education institutions in Portugal. Data sampling consists in students of different courses of higher education in Alentejo (Portugal). Data collection was conducted through a survey questionnaire. This work presents the analysis of students’ representations of quality...

Characterizing the quality of education may involve the analysis of several variables, such as human resources, financial resources, teaching methodologies, personal and social development, and positive academic results. Nevertheless, all elements of the education system matter and may contribute to improve its quality. Ultimately, the success of an education system depends on the interaction of all elements. In order to study the representations of quality, a longitudinal research project is taking place in some higher education institutions of Alentejo region (Portugal). In this paper, the authors analyzed the relationship between scores on quality education representations of students from the Évora University and Beja and Portalegre Polytechnic Institutes, attending on nursing and management degrees. The analyses of the selected factors had shown human and institutional factors as the most important.

peer-reviewed; This study, set in the field of English for academic legal purposes (EALP), sets out to first identify a semi-technical word list in post-graduate academic legal written texts and then to examine the rhetorical functions such a wordlist enables as an indicator of the epistemology of the disciplinary community. This field was chosen because access to student assignments is hindered by the fact that they are not in published form; yet numerically, they most likely outnumber published academic material. In a post-graduate context, where in the field of law there is an influx of non-native speakers who have had their legal education in systems other than the English language dominated Common Law, the need to quickly understand how information is to be organised and communicated in student academic texts is a very pressing one indeed. The thesis adopts a corpus linguistics approach to the identification of semi-technical language. The corpus is comprised of texts written by post-graduate students studying Masters in Law (LLM) courses at three universities in Ireland; the corpus is just under one million words. The approach relies on quantitative methods to arrive at a vocabulary list and beyond the initial setting of parameters for data organisation and filtering...

The Graduate School Committee on Overseas Students, at a meeting on 15 June 1993, requested that the Study Skills Centre co-ordinate the drafting of a discussion paper outlining issues relating to the English language needs and other academic support requirements of overseas students in the Graduate School. The first section of this paper presents data relating to the growth and distribution of overseas graduate students at ANU over the past decade, including changes in countries of origin and in enrolments in research and coursework degrees. The second section outlines some of the issues relating to levels of English language competence and to the commitment of the University to providing an appropriate educational response to the special needs of these students. The next section discusses the strengths and weaknesses of possible measures to meet the needs of these students. A final summary of issues and recommendations is provided.; no

This thesis uses pre-commissioning academic and demographic factors, along with flight school performance data to measure pilot success in flight school. The goal is to determine if undergraduate major or school attended affect flight school performance. Measure of effectiveness include: (I) Flight School Completion Status, (2) Aviation Pre-Flight Indoctrination Composite Scores, and (3) Primary Flight Training Composite Scores. Recruitment for naval aviators is focused on individuals with "technical majors," according to present policy of the Naval Recruiting Command. This recruiting philosophy is based on the "Rickover Hypothesis," which postulates that naval officers with technical degrees are superior to naval officers with non-technical degrees. The Logit model showed that aviators with engineering degrees have a statistically greater chance of completing flight school than aviators with non-engineering technical or non-technical degrees. In addition, the results showed an association between academic background and flight school performance. This research justifies the current Navy policy of concentrating aviator recruitment efforts on individuals with technical degrees.

The primary and secondary education system in Kazakhstan has accomplished significant achievements. Kazakhstan has embarked on profound reforms to improve the quality of the education system and is increasingly looking to international standards and best practices. Reform initiatives include the expansion of the pre-primary education network, the development of new mechanisms of school financing (including a new per capita funding scheme), the creation of resource centers to support small-class schools, further investment in school infrastructure, and a wider use of information technologies in schools. In this context of reforms, while there is an apparent desire to increase resources devoted to education and awareness that spending per student remains markedly lower than the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) average and that of other neighboring countries, there remains an official reluctance to expand public expenditure on education. This report analyses the effectiveness of the Kazakh school system and identifies policy areas with potential efficiency gains or requiring further public investment. The following policy priorities were identified to improve the effectiveness of resource use in the Kazakh school system: increase overall public spending on education as the sector gains absorptive capacity...

The Bologna Process has led to the implementation of new methodologies at university that may influence students in such a way that new factors may play a relevant role in explaining academic performance. The aim of this paper is to analyse the influence of a range of factors on students' performance by comparing results with previous contributions. The study focused on management and business administration students. Results confirm the existence of factors in line with previous studies. However, other factors such as personal organization and planning, or participation in integration programs have a greater influence than in the past.

A fundamental question facing East Asia, especially its low- and middle income economies, is how to sustain or even accelerate the growth of recent decades. From 1950 to 2005, for example, the region's real income per head rose sevenfold. With aging populations, these economies will need to derive an increasing share of growth from productivity improvements rather than from physical factor accumulation to drive growth. The book argues that higher education is failing to deliver skills for growth and research for innovation because of widespread disconnects between higher education institutions and other skill and research users and providers. These disconnects undermine the very functioning of the higher education system. The main assumption of the report is that to deliver labor market skills to higher education graduates, these institutions: (a) must have characteristics that are aligned with what employers and employees need; and (b) must be well connected among themselves and other skills providers. Similarly...

One way to analyze this engagement is to focus on students’ approaches to learning and studying...

In this work we aim to identify and describe the markers of utterance responsibility in academic texts through modality and mediative. The theoretical and methodological approach we follow is based on textual analysis of discourses postulates according to Adam (2011). Our theoretical background is also based on Rabatel (2009) studies on the utterance responsibility; Campos (2004) and Castilho & Castilho (2002) on the category of modalities, Guentchèva (1994) regarding the meditative category, and Neves (2012), which promotes a discussion that articulates both categories. The analysis showed that speakers-utterers (S1/U1) base their points of view on the second utterer's points of view (U2). We also observed that S1/U1 expressed different degrees of engagement in relation to the information reported, assuming or imputing the utterance responsibility; Este artigo objetiva identificar, descrever e interpretar os marcadores da responsabilidade enunciativa em texto acadêmico por meio do exame das categorias das modalidades e mediativo.

This article maps the idiosyncratic features in the development of graduate and postgraduate management education in Mexico City. The emergence of these degrees is partly in response to the globalization of higher education but also to the transformation of Mexican business organisations into a more hierarchical structure. The evolution of the institutional setting thus offers an indirect study of the appearance of professional managers in a region otherwise dominated by family run firms. As a result, this article contributes to contemporary Mexican business history by linking the forms of interaction between multinationals, indigenous businesses and management education.
