There is considerable predominance in the adoption of perspectives based on characteristics in research into entrepreneurship. However, most studies describe the entrepreneur from a static or snapshot approach; very few adopt a dynamic perspective. The aim of this study is to contribute to the enhancement of knowledge concerning entrepreneurial process dynamics through an understanding of the values, characteristics and actions of the entrepreneur over time. By focusing on personal attributes, we have developed a framework that shows the importance of affective and cognitive aspects of entrepreneurs and the way that they evolve during the development of their business.

This work is concerned with the existence of an optimal control strategy for the long-run average continuous control problem of piecewise-deterministic Markov processes (PDMPs). In Costa and Dufour (2008), sufficient conditions were derived to ensure the existence of an optimal control by using the vanishing discount approach. These conditions were mainly expressed in terms of the relative difference of the alpha-discount value functions. The main goal of this paper is to derive tractable conditions directly related to the primitive data of the PDMP to ensure the existence of an optimal control. The present work can be seen as a continuation of the results derived in Costa and Dufour (2008). Our main assumptions are written in terms of some integro-differential inequalities related to the so-called expected growth condition, and geometric convergence of the post-jump location kernel associated to the PDMP. An example based on the capacity expansion problem is presented, illustrating the possible applications of the results developed in the paper.; CNPq (Brazilian National Research Council)[304866/03-2]; FAPESP (Research Council of the State of Sao Paulo)[03/06736-7]; ANR[ANR-09-SEGI-004]

Acidosis is a common and deleterious aspect of maintenance dialysis. Traditionally, it is considered to be an elevated anion gap acidosis caused by the inability to excrete nonvolatile anions. Stewart`s approach made it possible to identify real determinants of the acid-base status and allowed quantification of the components of these disturbances, especially the unmeasured anions. We performed a cross-sectional study to identify and quantify each component of acidosis in hemodialysis maintenance patients. Sixty-four maintenance hemodialysis patients and 14 controls were enrolled in this study. Gasometrical and biochemical analysis were performed before the midweek dialysis session. Quantitative physicochemical analysis was carried out using the Stewart methodology. Hemodialysis patients were found to have mild acidemia (mean pH: 7.33 +/- 0.06 versus 7.41 +/- 0.05) secondary to metabolic acidosis (serum bicarbonate: 18.8 +/- 0.26 versus 25.2 +/- 0.48 mEq/l). The metabolic acidosis was due to retention of unmeasured anions (6.5 +/- 0.29 versus 3.1 +/- 0.62 mEq/l), hyperchloremia (105.1 +/- 0.5 versus 101.8 +/- 0.7 mEq/l), and hyperphosphatemia (5.90 +/- 0.19 versus 3.66 +/- 0.14 mg/dl). Compared with control values, the unmeasured anions and hyperchloremia had a similar acidifying effect (3.4 and 3.3 mEq/l)...

Urban public spaces are conceived within certain technical standards, which would meet people's needs. According to users' perception that does not match all the time with the given arrangement, that may lead to rejection or misuse. In this article, the approach to analysis of projects for urban public spaces associates the perception of its users' health with accessibility that these spaces can offer. This becomes a support for efficacy analysis of projects as part of a social inclusion policy. The approach associates an international functionality, incapacity and health classification to a multi-criteria analysis of these factors through interviews with involved population, using Likert scale, where aspects considered as accessibility barriers or facilitators of these spaces are evaluated. The results of the case studied in Belém-Brazil showed, for example, that the understanding that people build on the circulation environment regarding barriers or facilitators is not always determined by difficulties related to their performance in actions and that an inadequate project may be a limiting factor to accessibility, even for people without a diagnosed disability.

[EN]: To date...

Introduction: In an effort to treat obesity, health care professionals pursue, by means of dieting and exercise interventions, weight loss as a primary goal of treatment. Although in few cases these interventions induce shortterm moderate weight loss, in the long-term, the efficacy of these treatments is at least questionable. Weight-loss interventions based on restrictive diets may be associated to adverse health and well-being. In this regard, some researchers have considered shifting the focus of obesity treatment into a health-centered paradigm. Among the models derived from this new paradigm, Health at Every Size (HAES) is one of the most referenced. HAES has enhanced intuitive eating as a core component of the paradigm, which refers to the reliance on biological mechanisms to regulate food intake (i.e., internal hunger and satiety cues). Recently, intuitive eating has been winning recognition since it have been associated with numerous indices of physical and psychological well-being, and noteworthy, it have not been related to any adverse effects. Objective: The present paper reviews the concept of intuitive eating, as well as the existing evidence that upholds this emerging approach. Also, it discusses the implication of shifting the focus of dietetic interventions into a health-centered paradigm. Design: Narrative Review. Conclusions: Although it is certain there is a need to extend current research on health-centered interventions...

We describe Amartya Sen's Capability Approach to welfare evaluation in the language of standard welfare economics, and assess to what extent it provides a genuine alternative for individual welfare measurement and policy evaluation. We review the nascent empirical literature on the capability approach and assess whether it makes a genuine difference with standard welfare evaluation.

Conclui-se que as hérnias perineais primárias podem ser tratadas por este acesso combinado, utilizando-se próteses.; Spontaneous development of perineal hernias is a very rare condition and many techniques have been described for repairing the floor defect. The authors describe the use of a combined approach in the surgical treatment of primary perineal hernias, by reconstructing the muscle pelvic floor and restoring the rectum to its sacral position with mesh repair. The case of one patient with a huge primary perineal hernia is reported...

Author's final manuscript; A variety of real-world levee underseepage problems can best be modeled using an axisymmetric analysis approach. In current practice, axisymmetric levee underseepage analyses are performed using numerical modeling approaches, such as the FEM. In contrast, levee underseepage analyses of planar cross sections are often analyzed using a blanket theory analytical approach, which is quicker and more convenient than numerical modeling. To address this problem, this paper provides a derivation of a series of closed-form blanket theory analytical equations that can be used to perform an axisymmetric levee underseepage analysis. This derivation begins from the governing equation of semiconfined uid ow beneath a levee in a shallow semiconfined aquifer. The equations that result from this derivation can be used to calculate the total head in the pervious foundation layer and the seepage quantity that passes through the levee foundation over time. Different equations are presented for different seepage directions relative to the axis of rotation and different model boundary conditions. A typical example problem is used to compare results from the axisymmetric analytical equations that are derived with those from axisymmetric finite-element analyses. For this example problem...

This paper presents a new and less conservative condition for the robust stability test of discrete-time polytopic systems by using a descriptor system approach. The stability condition is formulated in terms of a set of linear matrix inequalities and can be easily adapted for robust controller synthesis. The developed results can be viewed as a discretetime counterpart of the continuous-time one proposed by Cao and Lin (2004). This also enables us to offer a unified framework, namely the so-called descriptor system approach, for the analysis and synthesis of both discrete-time and continuous-time uncertain linear systems. Simulation examples are given to illustrate the theoretical results we established.

Cognitive processes are information, meaning, structure organization and transformation processes, most of which are inferential. Then, an important question about cognitive processes is: What is their deepest basis? Where, when, how and at what level do they originate? Here, it is proposed that the original and deepest basis of cognitive processes is essentially ecological and sustained on the permanent unity and relationship between the living organism and its environment. We understand as ecological the undecomposable union between a living organism and its environment, as well as every kind of immediate and stepwise relationship between them. The relationships between a living organism and its environment is held everyday and continuously in order to get its life-preserving resources and to adopt their adequate, best or most successful actions and reactions over the environment, as well as to reach its necessary internal and external balances with and within it. In these terms, the elementary perception and categorization are seen as basic cognitive processes originated in that permanent and whole ecological relationship. This way, representation systems and information processes as developed by each species are seen as basic preservation functions (life-preservation functions) in the teleonomic sense given by Pittendrigh (1958) and later used by Lorenz (1986) within his ethological approach. These arguments support the idea that any species...

Cross-language summarization is the task of generating a summary in a language different from the language of the source documents. In this paper, we propose a graph-based approach to multi-document summarization that integrates machine translation quality scores in the sentence extraction process. We evaluate our method on a manually translated subset of the DUC 2004 evaluation campaign. Results indicate that our approach improves the readability of the generated summaries without degrading their informativity.

Based on a series of research results on Moroccan migration to Canada, this paper seeks to prove how focusing on the migration routes of a specific national group of migrants and using a multi-situated methodological approach will not lead to the "ethnisizing", culturalizing or nationalizing of the experienced realities, but rather to the placing of actions within their political, cultural, social and economic structuring contexts. By resorting to an inductive approach, this perspective allows us to identify frontiers (in a symbolic sense) other than cultural or national belonging, reminding us of the internal heterogeneity of the studied national group, allowing us to apprehend other decisive factors in the migration route, and favoring our understanding of the plurality of the space practices and integration strategies developed by social actors when facing the concrete opportunities and limitations found during the whole migration process.

A conventional approach for solving an economic production quantity (EPQ) model with multi-delivery policy and quality assurance is to use mathematical modeling for deriving the system cost function and to employ differential calculus for proving convexity of the cost function before determining the optimal operating policy. This paper presents a simplified solution procedure to reexamine a specific EPQ model [1] and demonstrates that both, the optimal manufacturing lot size and the long-run cost function can be derived without derivatives. The proposed approach may enable practitioners-with little knowledge of calculus-to understand such a real life vendor-buyer integrated system with ease.

In this paper, a new learning approach based on time-series image information is presented. In order to implement this new learning technique, a novel time-series input data representation is also defined. This input data representation is based on information obtained by image axis division into boxes. The difference between this new input data representation and the classical is that this technique is not time-dependent. This new information is implemented in the new Image-Based Learning Approach (IBLA) and by means of a probabilistic mechanism this learning technique is applied to the interesting problem of time series forecasting. The experimental results indicate that by using the methodology proposed in this article, it is possible to obtain better results than with the classical techniques such as artificial neuronal networks and support vector machines.

Occupational therapists use a client-centered approach as part of embracing a philosophy of respect for, and partnership with people receiving services. This approach must also be incorporated in measuring outcomes of the service and clients must have input in evaluating the outcomes of their intervention. This article reports on a specific phase of a larger study in which clients have been included in confirming the domains for an outcome measure in occupational therapy in mental health care settings. A case study strategy was used which enabled mental health care users to express their needs and expectations of the occupational therapy service. These were captured during 12 individual interviews and two focus groups. The findings were thematically analysed and constantly compared with the domains identified by occupational therapy clinicians in Phase 1 of the larger study. Results from this study indicated that the service which the participating occupational therapy clinicians were rendering, were in keeping with the needs and expectations of the mental health care users.
