Contemporary reality proves that public space is shifted from the traditional square to the shopping mall - cities is now impossible not to take into consideration the dynamics of these new spaces and especially the way in which they try to impose as part of the public domain or, even more, as the ideal public space. But how is it possible to depart from the idea of shopping malls being described as non-places, an idea that has been generally adopted and repeatedly used, and move to an idea that wants them to represent the new public space? Are the qualities they claim to have, sufficient enough to go through such an approach? This paper therefore aims to examine the different levels of publicity in the shopping mall and, from this perspective, to discuss whether this “idealized” place, is a vital public space, or just an illusion, instead of a real answer, to people’s continuous need for a high quality public space.

Fentanyl is used in obstetrical practice to promote analgesia and anesthesia during labor and in cesarean delivery, with rapid and short-term effects. To determine fentanyl concentrations in maternal plasma, in the placental intervillous space, and in the umbilical artery and vein in term pregnant women. Ten healthy pregnant women underwent epidural anesthesia with fentanyl plus bupivacaine and lidocaine, and fentanyl concentrations were determined in the various maternal and fetal compartments, including the placental intervillous space, which has not been previously studied in the literature. The ratios of fentanyl concentrations in the various maternal and fetal compartments revealed an 86% rate of placental fentanyl transfer. The highest fentanyl concentrations were detected in the placental intervillous space, being 2.19 times higher than in maternal plasma, 2.8 times higher than in the umbilical vein and 3.6 times higher than in the umbilical artery, with no significant differences between the umbilical vein and artery, demonstrating that there was no drug uptake by fetal tissues nor metabolism of the drug by the fetus despite the high rates of placental transfer. The present study demonstrated that the placental intervillous space acted as a site of fentanyl deposit...

Elas estimularam outras transformações visivelmente percebidas no uso e ocupação do espaço.

The premature loss of primary teeth may harm the normal occlusal development, although there are debates relating to the necessity of using space maintainer appliances. The aim of the study is to evaluate the changes in the dental arch perimeter and the space reduction after the premature loss of the lower first primary molar in the mixed dentition stage. The sample consists of 4 lower arch plaster models of 31 patients, within the period of pre-extraction, 6, 12 and 18 months after the lower first primary molar extraction. A reduction of space was noted with the cuspid dislocation and the permanent incisors moving toward the space of the extraction site. It was concluded that the lower first molar primary premature loss, during the mixed dentition, implicates an immediate placement of a space maintainer.

In this work, we propose a radical approach for exploring the space of all possible protein structures. We present techniques to explore the clash-free conformation space, which comprises all protein structures whose atoms are not in self-collision. Unlike energy based methods, this approach allows efficient exploration and remains general -- the benefits of characterization of the space apply to all proteins. We hypothesize that this conformation space branches into many small funnels as we sample compact conformations. We develop a compact representation the conformation space, and give experimental results that support our hypothesis. Potential applications of our method include protein folding as well as observing structural relationships between proteins.; Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA)

Given a description of a probabilistic automaton (one-head probabilistic finite automaton or probabilistic Turing machine) and an input string x of length n, we ask how much space does a deterministic Turing machine need in order to decide the acceptance of the input string by that automaton? The question is interesting even in the case of one-head one-way probabilistic finite automata (PFA). We call (rational) stochastic languages (S^>_{rat}) the class of languages recognized by PFAs whose transition probabilities and cutpoints (i.e., recognition thresholds) are rational numbers. The class S^>_{rat} contains context-sensitive languages that are not context free, but on the other hand there are context-free languages not included in S^>_{rat}. Our main results are as follows: (1) The (proper) inclusion of S^>_{rat} in Dspace(log n), which is optimal (i.e., S^>_{rat} ot subset Dspace(o(log n))). The previous upper bounds were Dspace(n) [Dieu 1972; Wang 1992] and Dspace(log n log log n) [Jung 1984]. (2) Probabilistic Turing machines with space bound f(n) in O(log n) can be deterministically simulated in space O(min (c^{f(n)}log n, log n (f(n) + log log n))), where c is a constant depending on the simulated probabilistic Turing machine. The best previously known simulation required space O(log n (f(n) + log log n)) [Jung 1984]. Of independent interest is our technique to compare numbers given in terms of their values modulo a sequence of primes...

Look Rialma and Ceres, two small towns of Goiás, is to stand in front of a problem space: the challenge is made to understand them in the context in which they operate: the territory of the state of Goiás. Therefore, the objective of this study was to understand the social and space dynamics of cities as part of the modernization of the state of Goiás. Therefore, we use the category territory to understand the city in its essence (founded in herself and in external logic). This process, which involves action, founded the movement, locations, especially the intersection of local variables and distant. The methodological procedures of the research were based on literature review and reading, with a survey of dissertations and theses on medium and small cities in the proposal to investigate the methodologies related to the theme. We did a survey of official data relating the to institutions for services, the productive infrastructure, to demographic dynamics and the financial system of these cities studied Ceres and Rialma with public institutions, such municipalities, the Secretary of State for Planning and Development - SEPLAN and institutes such as the IBGE, IPEA and the National Treasury Secretariat. Questionnaires were also used in public institutions of the health...

A common phenomenon occurred in the most of Brazilian cities is related to urban expansion without space planning. The municipalities located in the Brazilian metropolitan areas, receiving large number of people and exercising ineffective public policies of space organization, they have the growth accelarated and they acquire Sharp urban problemas. This way, a lot of municipalities of the suburb apper around of the metropolis. The municipalities have little basic sutruture and they have little centers of of consumption and job. This condition make dependence of the municipalities with relation to metropolis. Aparecida de Goiânia is a typical exemple of Braziliam municipality of the suburb. This municipality is located in the metropolitan area of Goiânia. The municipality is having deep transformations in the urban struture. This way, the objective of this work is to develop a reflexion about this recent transformations occurred in the urban space of Aparecida de Goiânia. The methodology used was the proposal to divide the history of the municipality in periods to investigate the urban development that occurred since the origin of ghe municipality until the present. With basis in the proposal of periodization, this work propose to clarify the metamorphoses that the city had in a short period. The city appeared in the rural interior of Goiás...

This dissertation analyzes the novels All the Pretty Horses, The Crossing and Cities of the Plain, which constitute The Border Trilogy, written by the American author Cormac McCarthy. The main aspect of this study is the spatial construction, analyzed from the characters‟ point of view. Considering the possibility that the space is a human construct, loaded with personal and subjective symbolic values, the dissertation considers the point of view of cowboys characters in moments of adventurous projections and psychological conflicts. The configuration of the border space takes into consideration the perception and the focus of the characters, in constant cultural contact, mainly with foreign people. This research is also based on the idea that melancholy is predominant in the characters‟ lives, mainly when they suffer traumatic experiences, usually related to death and destruction. Thus, this feeling works as an important and fundamental affective filter to the process of scrutiny of the space and its appreciation. In the first two novels, two young cowboys travel to Mexico in search of an idealized space and come back changed after a series of dangerous adventures. They try to establish integration with the land but, when they meet and come to work together in the last novel...

This paper analyzes and further elaborates Panofsky’s hypothesis of a correspondence between the representation of space and the philosophical imagination of space focusing on Dutch still-life painting of the 17th century. Crossing the borderline of the painting into the area of the observer is a constituting element of these works as shown in a detailed analysis of the quite frequently appearing motif of mirrored figures and of Pieter Claesz’ "Still-life with Ham and a Basket of Cheese" in particular. This will reveal that the imagination of relative space...

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited; The U.S. Navy has placed doctrinal emphasis on space-based capabilities as a key enabler of naval operations since 1959. But the service has not provided the associated organizational focus necessary to develop an educated, experienced, and qualified professional space cadre. Despite this management shortcoming, the Navy remains critically reliant on capabilities provided by space-based assets and has continued to exploit these capabilities. This thesis critically reviews the current Navy Space Cadre and recent trends affecting its future. The origin of the cadre, management of its billet base, professional development of members, and future structure are examined. While the Navy Space Cadre meets minimum requirements set forth in Department of Defense and Department of the Navy directives, this study finds the effectiveness of the cadre is reduced due to a poor understanding of future requirements, an underdeveloped training and education progression, a non-standardized approach to operational unit support, and an undefined career path for cadre members. Recommendations are presented to improve the effectiveness without a wholesale restructuring of the community.

For a given tolerance epsilon > 0, the algorithm checks whether a planar projection of the given space curve is epsilon -rational and, in the affirmative case, generates a planar parametrization that is lifted to a space parametrization. This output rational space curve is of the same degree as the input curve, both have the same structure at infinity, and the Hausdorff distance between their real parts is finite. Moreover, in the examples we check that the distance is small.; This work has been developed, and partially supported...

PURPOSE: To evaluate a new, low-cost, reusable balloon trocar device for dissection of the preperitoneal space during endoscopic surgery.METHODS:Twenty swine (weight: 15-37 kg) were randomized to two groups, according to whether the preperitoneal space was created with a new balloon device manufactured by Bhio-Supply (group B) or with the commercially available OMSPDB 1000(r) balloon device manufactured by Covidien (group C). Quality and size of the created preperitoneal space, identification of anatomic structures, balloon dissection time, total procedure time, balloon resistance and internal pressure after insufflation with 300 mL of ambient air, balloon-related complications, and procedure cost were assessed.RESULTS:No significant differences in dissection time, total procedure time, or size of the created preperitoneal space were found between the groups. Balloons in group B had a significantly higher internal pressure compared to balloons in group C. None of the balloons ruptured during the experiment. Three animals in group C had balloon-related peritoneal lacerations. Despite a higher individual device cost, group B had a lower procedure cost over the entire experiment.CONCLUSION:The new balloon device is not inferior to the commercially available device in terms of the safety and effectiveness for creating a preperitoneal space in swine.

The problem concerning the nature and the function of the dead space is of basic importance for the full comprehension of the respiratory physiology and pathophysiology. To study the effect of an imposed external dead space on the optimal respiratory control system, we simulated the optimal neuro-muscular drive and respiratory signals, including instantaneous airflow and lung volume profiles, with dead space loading under hypercapnia. The dead space measurement model by Gray was employed and the human respiratory control simulator based on an optimality hypothesis was implemented. The ventilatory control simulations were performed with external dead space loading of 0, 0.4 and 0.8 liters under rest condition (Pico2=0%) and CO2 inhalation of 3% to 7%. The optimization of the respiratory signals and model behavior of the optimal respiratory control under dead space loading and hypercapnia were verified and found to be in general agreement with experimental findings.
