Hope is an important construct in marketing, once it is an antecedent of important marketing variables, such as trust, expectation and satisfaction (MacInnis & de Mello, 2005, Almeida, Mazzon & Botelho, 2007). Specifically, the literature suggests that hope can play an important influence on risk perception (Almeida, 2010, Almeida et al., 2007, Fleming, 2008, MacInnis & de Mello, 2005) and propensity to indebtedness (Fleming, 2008). Thus, this thesis aims to investigate the relations among hope, risk perception related to purchasing and consumption and propensity to indebtedness, by reviewing the existing literature and conducting two empirical researches. The first of them is a laboratory experiment, which accessed hope and risk perception of getting a mortgage loan. The second is a survey, investigating university students’ propensity to get indebted to pay for their university tuition, analyzed through the method of Structural Equations Modeling (SEM). These studies found that hope seems to play an important role on propensity to indebtedness, as higher levels of hope predicted an increase in the propensity to accept the mortgage loan, independent of actual risks, and an increase in the propensity of college students to get indebted to pay for their studies. In addition...

BACKGROUND: Muscle-based perception of the spatial properties of limbs constrains the patterning, timing and magnitude of muscle forces while performing motor activities. The centrality of muscle-based perception to both ordinary and skilled actions warrants attention from the rehabilitation community, since deficits in its functioning would be related to important functional limitations. In this overview, we summarize a body of research that may be used to guide the development of effective assessment tools and rehabilitation programs that are specifically directed towards such deficits. OBJECTIVES: There were four specific aims: first, to present an information-based approach to muscle-based perception that is grounded in physical laws; second to identify central principles underlying muscle-based perception that have been revealed and supported by empirical work; third, to summarize reports that have investigated whether the principles identified can be generalized to muscle-based perception in individuals with sensory-motor impairments; and fourth to provide a preliminary discussion of the potential implications of the research presented here for issues relating to rehabilitation.

Significant advances in the understanding of processes involved in face perception have been achieved. This study aims to review the literature of face perception in neurobiological and social contexts. The review focused on the mechanisms of mediation of face perception by neural substrates, and discussed some of the social signals provided by faces. We showed that psychological, neurophysiological and neuroimaging studies have demonstrated that a dedicated neural system for face perception exists in primates, which includes the fusiform face area (FFA), anterior superior temporal sulcus (STS) and anterior inferior temporal gyrus (ITG). But it remains to be understood how the integration of face perception occurs in the neurobiological context and in the social context.

Purpose Educational methods to diagnose and improve the level of environmental conception are required. The present work reports a methodology based on studies about the environmental perception of a university public, divided into general students and those related to the forest sciences, who are involved with disciplines and researches related to e.g. environmental management. Design/Methodology/Approach The environmental perception obtained from the graphical representation of environment and the most relevant actions indicated by the students to achieve the environmental conservation, divided in four levels of complexity, were correlated using principal component analysis. Findings The students from both groups having the highest scores in environmental perception prioritize actions related to the comprehension and responsibility levels, while the ideal scenario would be to indicate actions related to competence and citizenship. Thus, the complex concept about environment of the students is still incipient and, therefore, educational strategies can be traced based on the profiles obtained. Practical Implications The method for environmental perception can be designed for different populations and a scheme relating environmental perception with four levels of actions on behalf of the environmental conservation is proposed to diagnose environmental conceptions...

Conclusion.

A variety of measures are enlisted in an explanation of some longstanding perceptual phenomena associated with an assortment of visual patterns. In following the proximity principle of Gestalt psychology, these are commonly based upon a statistical treatment applied to one or another of a hierarchy of distance measures. Following from this, some problems of visual perception are tackled in terms of an active perceiving mechanism, which generates transformations in the realization of object invariance in space and over time. This generative transformational approach is also employed in an account of perception of various patterns and visual illusions. Although a range of proximity measures is involved throughout, the nearest neighbour metric is staple. For perception of unstructured visual arrays, the contribution of distance mechanisms, particularly nearest neighbours, is shown to be important. For structured arrays, the contribution of distance mechanisms along with transformations is important. Information about relative positions of image elements permits the selection of transformations that reveal structure. With respect to such information, however, the proximity principle is taken to its limits.; Thesis (Ph.D.)-- University of Adelaide...

Rodents use active whisker movements to explore their environment. The physical parameters of vibrissa deflections, which carry the texture information and are used by the tactile system for discrimination, are unknown. Particularly, it remains unclear whether perception relies on parameters such as frequency (e.g., spectral information) and intensity (e.g., mean speed) which need to be integrated over time or whether it has access to instantaneous kinematic parameters (i.e., the details of the trajectory). The search for instantaneous kinematic parameters is motivated by findings from studies on rodent vibrissae biomechanics showing that short-lived kinematic events, abrupt movements called ‘slips’, carry texture information and could therefore be used for tactile perception. Here, I use a novel detection of change paradigm in head-fixed rats, which presents passive vibrissa stimuli in seamless sequence for discrimination. Unlike previous paradigms, this procedure ensures that processes of decision making do not need to rely on memory functions and can, instead, directly tap into sensory signals. In a first attempt, repetitive pulsatile stimuli were employed in a noise free environment to optimally control the parameter space. I find that discrimination performance based on instantaneous kinematic cues far exceeds the ones provided by frequency and intensity. Neuronal modeling based on barrel cortex single-unit activity shows that small populations of sensitive neurons provide a transient signal that optimally fits the characteristic of the subject’s perception. However...

Does the way scholars measure inequality of opportunity correspond to how people perceive it? To answer this question we must first clarify how scholars define and measure inequality of opportunity, we will then discuss the possible mechanisms linking objective measures and subjective perception of the phenomenon, and finally we test our hypothesis by merging data coming from two sources: the European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (2011) and the International Social Survey Programme data (2009). We show that individual perception of unequal opportunity is heterogeneous across countries and among individuals. Moreover, the prevailing perception of the degree of unequal opportunity in a large sample of respondents is only weakly correlated with its objective measure. We estimate a multilevel model considering both individual and country level controls to explain individual perception of unequal opportunity. Our estimates suggest that one of the most adopted measure of inequality of opportunity has no significant role in explaining its perception. Conversely, other country level variables and personal experiences of intergenerational social mobility are important determinants of how inequality of opportunity is perceived.

Integrating information from the auditory and visual modalities is vital for speech perception. In this thesis, I describe two studies of audiovisual speech perception that make use of an audiovisual illusion known as the McGurk effect. In the McGurk effect, two different syllables presented simultaneously in auditory and visual modalities are fused and perceived as a novel syllable (McGurk & MacDonald, 1976). In the first study, we conducted a large-scale assessment of the McGurk effect across fourteen McGurk stimuli tested in up to 165 participants. This study revealed that McGurk perception is characterized by wide variability across stimuli. The second study investigated whether phonetic identification training could increase McGurk perception. This study showed that participants improved on the training task, but there was no increase in McGurk perception.

Contexte.

This thesis covers the area of soundfield representation, reconstruction and perception. The complexity and information content of a soundfield presents many mathematical and engineering challenges for accurate reconstruction. After an in-depth review of the field of mathematical soundfield representation, an analysis of the numerical and practical constraints for soundfield reconstruction is presented. A review of work in experimental psycho-acoustics higlights the variability of spatial sound perception. It is shown that the error and uncertainty in perception is of a comparable magnitude to the accuracy achievable by present soundfield systems. Therefore, the effects of hearing adaption, sensory bias, sensory conflict, and contextual memory cannot be ignored. If the listening environment is inappropriate or in conflict with the desired perceptual experience, little is gained from more complex soundfield representation or reconstruction. The imp! lications of this result to the delivery of spatial audio is discussed and some open problems for further exploration and experimentation are detailed.; Supervisor: Professor Rodney Kennedy, Supervisor's Email Address: rodney.kennedy@anu.edu.au; Yes

Most events that we encounter in everyday life provide our different senses with correlated information, and audiovisual speech perception is a familiar instance of multisensory integration. Several approaches will be used to further examine the role of cognitive factors on audiovisual speech perception. The main focuses of this thesis will be to examine the influences of cognitive load and selective attention on audiovisual speech perception, as well as the integration of auditory and visual information in talking distractor faces. The influence of cognitive factors on the temporal integration of auditory and visual speech, and gaze behaviour during audiovisual speech will also be addressed. The overall results of the experiments presented here suggest that the integration of auditory and visual speech information is quite robust to various attempts to modulate the integration. Adding a cognitive load task shows minimal disruption of the integration of auditory and visual speech information. Changing attentional instructions to get subjects to selectively attend to either the auditory or visual speech information also has a rather modest influence on the observed integration of auditory and visual speech information. Generally, the integration of temporally offset auditory and visual information seems rather insensitive to cognitive load or selective attentional manipulations. The processing of visual information from distractor faces seems to be limited. The language of the visually articulating distractors doesn't appear to provide information that is helpful for matching together the auditory and visual speech streams. Audiovisual speech distractors are not really any more distracting than auditory distractor speech paired with a still image...

Face-to-face communication is one of the most natural forms of interaction between humans. Speech perception is an important part of this interaction. While speech could be said to be primarily auditory in nature, visual information can play a significant role in influencing perception. It is not well understood what visual information is important or how that information is collected. Previous studies have documented the preference to gaze at the eyes, nose, and mouth of the talking face, but physical saliency, i.e., the unique low-level features of the stimulus, has not been explicitly examined. Two eye-tracking experiments are presented to investigate the role of physical saliency in the guidance of gaze fixations during audiovisual speech perception. Experiment 1 quantified the physical saliency of a talking face and examined its relationship with the gaze behaviour of participants performing an audiovisual speech perception task and an emotion judgment task. The majority of fixations were made to locations on the face that exhibited high relative saliency, but not necessarily the maximally salient location. The addition of acoustic background noise resulted in a change in gaze behaviour and a decrease in correspondence between saliency and gaze behaviour...

The purpose of the study was to assess the effect of an intervention program of goal setting using written report as feedback and controlling players’ perception during the competitive season of a mini-basketball team. The intervention program was implemented on under-12 male mini-basketball team. The independent variable was the application of the intervention program of the goal-setting. The dependent variables were players’ perception, and level of achievement of the goals. Three-four goals were design for each player. After each match, the players indicated in a scale from 0 to 10 their perception about the level of achievement of the goals. First day of practice of the week, the achievement of the goals and their perception was shown to the players. The results found show that: a) a reduction between the differences of the players’ perception and the goal achievement through the season, and b) a significant increase through the season of the achievement of the goals was found. The study may be a reference to help coaches to implement goal-setting in youth teams.
