Pesquisa exploratória e descritiva para verificar a existência e fatores relacionados a padronização do cateterismo urinário, em uma cidade do interior do estado de São Paulo, Brasil. Os dados foram coletados por meio de entrevista, mediante aprovação do Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa da Escola de Enfermagem de Ribeirão Preto. Das nove instituições hospitalares entrevistadas, 100% possuem o procedimento de cateterismo urinário padronizado. As instituições apresentam diferenças nos procedimentos propostos, o que interfere de maneira positiva e negativa na sua padronização e coloca em dúvida se o padronizado é o que está sendo realizado. A videofluoroscopia da deglutição (VDF) é um exame considerado padrão ouro como método de avaliação da deglutição que requer que o paciente ingira o contraste de Bário em diferentes consistências para que as fases oral e faríngea sejam avaliadas com maior efetividade. Porém, existe uma disparidade entre a viscosidade dos alimentos com o contraste de Bário para a VDF e os alimentos espessados com o espessante de forma empírica, indicado subjetivamente na terapia de reabilitação. Por isso, o objetivo desse estudo foi: padronizar a quantidade de espessante a ser acrescentado à fórmula infantil nas consistências néctar (N), mel (M) e pudim (P) em 2 temperaturas: ambiente (T1) e variando de 40ºC até 44ºC (T2); comparar os valores médios das viscosidades com as sete marcas dos espessantes mais comumente utilizados e disponíveis (E1, E2, E3, E4, E5, E6, E7) nas temperaturas T1 e T2; identificar a quantidade mínima de contraste de Bário a ser acrescentado à fórmula infantil para boa resolução na videofluoroscopia (50%, 25% e 12,5%) e elaborar um manual de preparo de alimento para VFD nas diferentes consistências (N, M, P) com contraste de Bário. Este estudo analisa aspectos redacionais e de apresentação das normas técnicas NBR 14724, NBR 10520 e NBR 6023, publicadas pela Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas (ABNT) e utilizadas na normatização de trabalhos acadêmicos. O referencial teórico do estudo informa sobre normalização, normas técnicas, as entidades normalizadoras, a ABNT e sua estrutura básica, o processo de criação das normas técnicas brasileiras, além de seus níveis e tipos, os documentos normativos empregados pela ABNT, e a importância da atividade normatizadora no ambiente acadêmico. A metodologia empregada constituiu-se na utilização do documento normativo atualmente usado pela ABNT para elaborar normas técnicas, entitulado Diretiva – Parte 3, como parâmetro de análise. Nas últimas décadas, as empresas do setor da construção civil têm buscado a certificação em sistemas de gestão da qualidade, principalmente por exigências de agentes contratantes e financiadores. Entretanto, apesar do elevado número de empresas certificadas, faltam evidências de que estas têm conseguido implementar efetivamente a padronização de seus processos e assim reduzir os problemas relacionados à qualidade do produto. Resultados preliminares do Projeto Sistema de Indicadores de Desempenho para Benchmarking na Construção Civil (SISIND-NET), desenvolvido pelo Núcleo Orientado para a Inovação da Edificação (NORIE) na Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), indicam estas dificuldades de implementação por parte das empresas. O presente trabalho tem o objetivo de propor diretrizes para o desenvolvimento e a implementação de padrões operacionais de processos construtivos em obras civis. Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq); This work presents the results of a study that aimed to establish a framework to standardize the process of a scientific journal. It has a team that performs operational routines regulated by standards (external) and patterns (internal and external). The high turnover rate of the supportive team has generated information loss and increased service variability. The research started from the assumption that the process standardization (which includes the formalization) could be a way to reduce this secondary effect. Standardization techniques were identified through a literature review of the main national and international databases of journals and congresses. The identified standardization techniques were analyzed considering the number of times they appeared in the papers analyzed and performance objectives proposed by Slack et al. (2009). As result of this research, a framework was obtained for the standardization of processes adapted to the needs of the journal studied. The model is feasible to be used more widely, given its structural similarity to the one proposed by Campos (2004), a Brazilian model that is a reference in the field.; Este trabalho apresenta o resultado de uma pesquisa cujo objetivo foi estabelecer um framework para padronização de processos em um periódico científico. Ele tem uma equipe que executa rotinas operacionais reguladas por normas (externas) e padrões (internos e externos). A rotatividade elevada de membros da equipe de apoio (bolsistas) gerava perda de informação e aumentava a variabilidade da qualidade do serviço prestado. A pesquisa partiu do pressuposto de que a padronização (que inclui a formalização) dos processos poderia ser uma forma de reduzir este efeito secundário. The standardization of requeijão cheese quality characteristics is a processing stage which is directly influenced by the chemical composition of the raw material. Fat and water concentrations are the main factors that cause variation in quality properties of the requeijão and, when not thoroughly controlled, may cause a lack in standardization of the food. Calculations of ingredients for effective standardization must be made in relation to the final product through of iterative calculations, which makes the manual process unfeasible. Thus, the objective of the present study was to develop a spreadsheet for ingredient calculation, with restrictions being the different concentrations of fat and water in order to standardize the final products. The spreadsheet was developed using the Excel 2007® Solver function, with just four input data: quantity of mass, water and fat content of the mass and fat content of the cream. The optimal solution was that which maximizes the amount of final product while meeting the stipulated constraints of fat and water. Results obtained with the spreadsheet were validated by processing the requeijão cheeses and comparison of the theoretical and practical parameters using the t-test. Preparation of high quality allergen extracts is essential for the diagnosis and immunotherapy of allergic disorders. Standardization of allergen extracts concerns determination of the allergen unit, development of reference material and measurement of the overall IgE binding capacity of an allergen extract. Recently, quantification of individual allergens has been the main focus of allergen standardization because the allergenicity of most allergen extracts is known to be mainly dependent on the content of a small number of allergen molecules. Therefore, characterization of major allergens will facilitate the standardization of allergens. In this article, we review the current state of allergen standardization. In addition, we briefly summarize the components of allergen extracts that should be under control for the optimization of allergen standardization, since its adjuvant-like activities could play an important role in allergic reactions even though the molecule itself does not bind to the IgE antibodies from subjects.

Standardization is critical to scientists and regulators to ensure the quality and interoperability of research processes, as well as the safety and efficacy of the attendant research products. This is perhaps most evident in the case of “omics science,” which is enabled by a host of diverse high-throughput technologies such as genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics. But standards are of interest to (and shaped by) others far beyond the immediate realm of individual scientists, laboratories, scientific consortia, or governments that develop, apply, and regulate them. Indeed, scientific standards have consequences for the social, ethical, and legal environment in which innovative technologies are regulated, and thereby command the attention of policy makers and citizens. This article argues that standardization of omics science is both technical and social. A critical synthesis of the social science literature indicates that: (1) standardization requires a degree of flexibility to be practical at the level of scientific practice in disparate sites; (2) the manner in which standards are created, and by whom, will impact their perceived legitimacy and therefore their potential to be used; and (3) the process of standardization itself is important to establishing the legitimacy of an area of scientific research.

Plants by virtue of its composition of containing multiple constituents developed during its growth under various environmental stresses providing a plethora of chemical families with medicinal utility. Researchers are exploring this wealth and trying to decode its utility for enhancing health standards of human beings. Diabetes is dreadful lifestyle disorder of 21st century caused due to lack of insulin production or insulin physiological unresponsiveness. The chronic impact of untreated diabetes significantly affects vital organs. Many manufacturing companies have developed their own operating system, usually based upon the Toyota Production System, in an effort to improve productivity, quality, and profitability. Continuous improvement is a central theme to most operating systems. Typically large continuous improvement projects or kaizen bursts are used to improve processes. However, these often lead to variable and unsustainable results. A hypothesis is that a detailed standardization of processes will enable opportunities to be quickly revealed. Then a focus on incremental improvement through experimentation can lead to dramatic sustainable results. This thesis is based upon my experience at Mighty Motors in an attempt to gain a deeper understanding about standardization and continuous improvement. Using sophisticated software, it applies statistical tools to develop surgical incidence rates and projects future year incidence rates based on projected population changes. This thesis focuses on medical logistics regionalization efforts underway throughout DoD and questions if outsourcing is the further of DoD medical logistics. This thesis further delineates a disposable product, surgical and clinical standardization program that DoD can immediately adopt to generate substantial savings in inventory investment. This thesis develops the idea that prepack surgical supplies can generate substantial savings following standardization. This thesis further develops the standardization structure, committee membership, subcommittee membership, and product review criteria for evaluating potential product standardization candidates. Optical communications promise the delivery of high bandwidth service to all types of customers. The potential for optical communications is enormous and has generated excitement and anticipation over the last decade. However, the emergence of a growing market has not materialized and the 1990s communications "bubble" has burst. One result of the bubble burst is that manufacturers of optical components have seen demand for their products plummet and are now struggling to survive. The future of the communications industry depends on its ability to provide better services and higher reliability. At some point, the upward curve of communications demand will require a strong optical components industry to support the industry. If the current stagnation continues, and the manufacturers fail, the economic pillar that is communications will suffer. The MIT Microphotonics Center has initiated a Communications Technology Roadmap study to better understand the technical, economic, and political factors that are inhibiting growth in the optical communications industry. Standardization, a common approach for controlling confounding in population-studies or data from disease registries, is defined to be a weighted average of stratum specific rates. Typically, discussions on the construction of a particular standardized rate regard the strata as fixed, and focus on the considerations that affect the specification of weights. Each year the data from the SEER cancer registries are analyzed using a weighting procedure referred to as ``direct standardization for age.'' To evaluate the performance of direct standardization, we define a general class of standardization operators. We regard a particular standardized rate to be the output of an operator and a given data set. Based on the functional form of the operators, we define a subclass of standardization operators that controls for confounding by measured risk factors. Using the fundamental disease probability paradigm for inference, we establish the conclusions that can be drawn from year-to-year contrasts of standardized rates produced by these operators in the presence of unmeasured cancer risk factors. Measurements of carbon content in coal using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is limited by its low measurement precision and accuracy. A spectrum standardization method was proposed to achieve both reproducible and accurate results for the quantitative analysis of carbon content in coal with LIBS. The proposed method utilized the molecular carbon emissions to compensate the diminution of atomic carbon emission caused by matrix effect. The compensated carbon line intensities were further converted into an assumed standard state with fixed plasma temperature, electron density, and total number density of elemental carbon, which is proportional to its concentration in the coal samples. In addition, in order to obtained better compensation for total carbon number density fluctuations, an iterative algorithm was applied, which is different from our previous standardization calculations. The modified spectrum standardization model was applied to the measurement of carbon content in 24 bituminous coal samples. In the present work, the spectrum standardization method was combined with the dominant factor based partial least square (PLS) method to improve the measurement accuracy of carbon content in coal by LIBS. The combination model employed the spectrum standardization method to convert the carbon line intensity into standard state for more accurately calculating the dominant carbon concentration, and then applied PLS with full spectrum information to correct the residual errors. The combination model was applied to the measurement of carbon content for 24 bituminous coal samples. The results demonstrated that the combination model could further improve the measurement accuracy compared with both our previously established spectrum standardization model and dominant factor based PLS model using spectral area normalized intensity for the dominant factor model. For example, the coefficient of determination (R2), the root-mean-square error of prediction (RMSEP), and the average relative error (ARE) for the combination model were 0.99, 1.75%, and 2.39%, respectively; while those values for the spectrum standardization method were 0.83...

The thesis investigates the role of public actors in private rule-making processes at the example of the European Commission’s interventions in private industry standardization in the mobile telecoms, high-definition television, digital broadcasting and intermodal transport industries. It demonstrates that, far from having replaced public rule-making or representing a form of ‘better’ regulation, the private development of technical standards is constrained by the same collective action and decision-making problems that constrain conventional policy-making processes. Without the facilitating interventions of public actors, private standard setters often struggle to overcome these constraints. The ability of public actors to facilitate the private development of technical standards, however, depends on a number of conditions. First they need to rely on entrepreneurial rather than conventional policy instruments based on hierarchical authority and the power of hard law. Analisar das novas tendências na área de normalização no que se refere à apresentação dos trabalhos acadêmicos do tipo teses e dissertações. O universo da pesquisa é a área de ciências biológicas da Universidade Estadual de Campinas, no período de 1999 a 2005. Dada a importância da padronização para que a comunicação científica se efetive, destaca-se a necessidade de formular diretrizes mais consistentes para orientar os pesquisadores, de forma a atender tanto aos critérios de avaliação de produtividade científica como aos requisitos da qualidade formal das publicações. A aplicação de método qualitativo, por meio de entrevistas com os coordenadores de pós-graduação e bibliotecários da área leva a algumas reflexões sobre o papel do bibliotecário, das agências de normalização e dos órgãos de financiamento da pesquisa nesse novo cenário.
