The dissertation charts the momentous shift in the thinking of war that takes place in Europe around 1800. Against the background of the Napoleonic Wars, it examines the discourse on war in literature, military theory, philosophy, cartography, mathematics, and pedagogy. It argues that across these fields and disciplines, war is constituted as a world in itself, but a destabilized world governed by chance and contingency. As one theorist states, the complexity of warfare has risen to such a degree that war has become an empire of chance – 'l'empire du hazard.' Centered on the notion of the 'state of war,' the dissertation maps out the attempts to describe this complex epistemic regime as well as the inventions devised to manage it. These inventions are inextricably linked to a reconfiguration of the poetics of war. Across traditional genre boundaries, in treatises, in novellas and novels, but also on sketches, maps, and in games, war becomes just as much a poetological problem as an epistemological one. Having to reconstruct the state of war with symbolic means, the operational logic of war games, the topographical image of the military map, and the structure of a text all reveal so many conceptions of the phenomenon of war. I show how these different media are refashioned into technologies of experience that simulate the matrix of war virtually in order to immerse individuals into this symbolic world. Against the tradition of speculative philosophy that flourishes around 1800...

Adrenal incidentaloma was detected in an 81-year-old male patient and a 37-year-old female patient who had been diagnosed with essential thrombocytosis. Each patient's Janus Kinase 2 (JAK2) V617F mutation was positive, and they were evaluated as having non-functional adrenal incidentaloma. The JAK2 activates the signal transducers and activators of transcription (STAT) proteins which then activate the phosphoinositol-3 kinases, Ras, mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases, and transcription. Constitutive activation causes cell proliferation and dysregulation of apoptosis. It is thought that STAT3 activation-mediated JAK family kinases have a central role in the solid tumor cell series. Permanent activation of STAT3 and STAT5 causes tumor cell proliferation, survival, metastasis, and an increase in tumor-mediated inflammation in solid and hematologic tumors. According to our literature screening, irregular JAK signaling, seen at the pathogenesis of many solid and hematologic tumors, has not been previously evaluated with regard to adrenal tumors. As a result, our cases are the first coexistence of JAK V617F mutation with adrenal incidentaloma in the literature. Because of this, we think that JAK2 mutation must be evaluated to clarify the etiology of adrenal incidentalomas.

The literature may be a research source of Education History because it may show what the official sources haven’t been able to keep (sometimes the facts were incompatible to the official positions or even irrelevant). The literature may offer, to history, a representation of the humanity status in a specific moment and place. Habits, opinions, affection, disagreement, men, women, children. Analyze the experience and its narrativity elucidating the relation between them is the goal of this work. The aim is to discuss how faint are the boundaries between the real and the fictional in the literature, focusing the intersection between factual anchorage and literary narrative.Based upon the traumatic experience, the Mozambican CIvil war, the novels "Sleepwalking Land" (2007), by Mia Couto, and Apocalypse Winds (2006), by Pauline Chiziane, resume the historical fact by way of fiction, including the voice of subalterns, characters in general that not gained prominence in writing the official history of the country .Therefore, it seeks to understand how to process the historical experience and how it could house other experience classes.; Sem bolsa; Analisar a experiência e sua narratividade, elucidando as relações entre ambas, é o objetivo deste trabalho.

Since the 1990s, there has been an increasing interest in the study of genres (Swales 1990). Recent research on the academic journal book review (BR) has shown that the BR in English is shaped according to a rhetorical structure that gives it genre status (Motta-Roth 1998). However, it is not known whether this rhetorical structure is shared by comparable texts in other languages. This chapter carried out an English-Spanish cross-linguistic study of the rhetorical structure of BRs on the basis of two comparable corpora of 20 BRs of literature in each language. The main results show that, despite sharing similar overall patterns of organization, the Spanish BRs of literature develop more descriptive moves and are less likely to end with criticism-loaded strategies.; Peer reviewed

The article adapts the headings of Wallace Stevens's poem «Notes towards a supreme fiction» to describe what the author believes a «supreme Internet literature» will eventually look like. Drawing on his own experience as a writer who has published in both print and electronic formats, he surveys contemporary creative writing on the World Wide Web and comes to the following conclusions about Internet literature: 1) it must cut to the chase; 2) it must be postmodern; 3) it must be brief; 4) it must have «whistles and bells»; 5) it must be idealistic; 6) it must not live up to its ideal; 7) it must side-track; 8) it must be free; 9) it must be seductive; 10) it must not be read; 11) it must attract writers who are suspicious of web publication; 12) it must invite immediate feedback; and 13) it must resist closure.

Literature plays a core role in the class of Portuguese Language, a specialised context for teaching literacy competencies. This text reports a study about knowledge and skills privileged in literary texts’ reading in national exams. A document analysis of seventeen exams of Portuguese, used by the Ministry of Education between 1996 and 2012, was conducted to identify the “reading objects” chosen for the exams, the text structures that were the focus of the questions and the reading operations requested. The results show that besides the central role of the national literary canon in the assessment, contemporary poetry texts are the preferred “reading objects”. This allows the conclusion that questions about literary contents aim to evaluate student’s critical thinking regarding works by canonical authors. The study also showed that reading literature is perceived as the act of understanding and (re)constructing the meanings of a text by an active and competent reader.; La literatura juga un paper central en la classe de Llengua Portuguesa, com a context especialitzat per a l'ensenyament i l'aprenentatge de competències d'alfabetització. This article sets out the objectives, approaches and organisational development of a still on-going inter-university literature-teaching project entitled ‘Between the Lines: Comprehensive Reading of Literary Texts in a Foreign Language’, which was awarded a two-year grant by the Catalan Agency for the Management of University and Research Grants, AGAUR (MQD 00121). As a means of countering students’ excessive concern with essentially superficial aspects of literary texts and in order to facilitate their understanding of more complex textual issues, this project has systematically emphasised the issue of narrativity in literature teaching, thereby also helping students to approach their subject in a more technically sophisticated way in keeping with the demands of their degree. The article discusses the various phases of the project’s implementation, with reference to the underlying problem that gave impetus to the initiative, as well as setting out its provisional conclusions.; Aquest article descriu els objectius, l’enfocament i l’organització d’un projecte interuniversitari de Millora de la Qualitat Docent (MQD 00121) en l’àmbit de la literatura titulat ‘Between the Lines: Comprehensive Reading of Literary Texts in a Foreign Language’ (‘Entre línies: lectura exhaustiva de textos literaris en llengua estrangera’) atorgat per l’Agència de Gestió d’Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca (AGAUR). This article centers round significant issues such as how children's literature supports the development of content literacy of students and what content literacy implies in itself. Based on a case study in a children's literature class, the author first defines content literacy, then outlines how mismatches in the classes derived from different cultural backgrounds of the students can influence the development of literacy in school. The article provides a brief analysis of classroom data followed by a proposal for developing students' content literacy development when they are asked to work with a novel; appropriate strategies to establish reading and writing comprehension of classic novels (in this case study"Treasure Island") in order to motivate students; how to develop activities aimed at helping students improve their analytical reading and writing skills; and how to sharpen children's self - regulated learning skills.; Este artículo se centra en torno a como la literatura para niños puede influir en el desarrollo de la alfabetización de contenidos y lo que la alfabetización de contenido implica en sí mismo. Keeping in mind the challenges brought by the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), particularly those connected with independent study and the promotion of variety and flexibility in the learning experience, new teaching strategies are required to cope with new educational demands. One of the problems involved in the teaching of second-language literature at undergraduate level is ensuring that our students read the assigned texts. Reading is a complex communication process which requires thought and individual construction of meaning. Close reading the assigned texts thus is essential to be able to take part in class discussion. I have introduced `study guides´ and `guided notes´ in the English Literature class not only to help my students become self-sufficient readers but also to make reading and close-reading easier. `Guided notes´ are teacher-prepared hand-outs that outline or map the assigned readings, leaving blank spaces for students to fill in with key concepts, facts or important ideas. `Study guides´ are lists of written questions and activities created to provide direction, and highlight critical information to students. Results indicated that the introduction of both `guided notes´ and `study guides´ in the classroom was successful at increasing the students’ participation in class discussion and improving their English fluency and articulation of ideas. They were overwhelmingly preferred when compared with students’ reading on their own.
