The work aims to clarify and discuss what it means to "think" in the work of H. Arendt. In the first part, and paying particular attention to the life of the spirit, the link between thought and action is analyzed, exposing the distance of thought, as admiration, meditation and dynamic exercise in unison with the mere contemplation; also it is related to the problems of evil and loneliness. In the second part, the author reflects on the ontology that underlies Arendt's vision. In this regard, argues that gets an ontology of Heidegger operari his teacher had underestimated and deformed.

In I957 Peter Geach argued that Ockham's theory of mental language was too facile, that it made the grammar of mental language look too suspiciously like that of Latin: "He merely transfers features of Latin grammar to Mental, and then regards this as explaining why such features occur in Latin -- they are needed there if what we say inwardly in Mental is to be outwardly got across to others in Latin. But clearly nothing is explained at all.'' In 1970 John Trentman responded to this charge in a short article that has since become very influential. In that article Trentman makes three claims among others: (1) Ockham thought of mental language as a kind of stripped-down, "ideal" language, containing just those grammatical features that affect the truth conditions of mental sentences. (2) There can be no synonymy in mental language. (3) There can be no equivocation in mental language. This paper examines these three claims in turn. Each of them is "correct" in the sense that Ockham either explicitly holds it or else seems committed to holding it on the basis of other features of his thought. Nevertheless, I maintain, each of these claims also leads to difficulties for Ockham, either (with respect to the first claim) because there are certain empirical...

Despite increased interest in turn-of-the-century Austrian literature, women writers of the period have suffered the classic "Austrian fate": their works remain unrecognized. Yet a comparison of both the fiction and non-fiction by women of Vienna's Fin de siecle uncovers parallels between these works and those of eighteenth-century women. These parallels provide insight into the discrepancies between a woman's public and her private self-image in the age of male liberal humanism since the Enlightenment. Rosa Mayreder's nonfiction projects progressive ideals which are compromised in the fiction where the protagonists assume roles created for them by Western patriarchal society. Closer examination shows that women of the eighteenth century also compensated and compromised their positions in order to secure a reading public. Rosa Mayreder's utopian vision of a reformed patriarchal ideology (non-fiction) gives way to resignation in the fictional works. But where the modernists endeavor to sustain the ideals of humanistic thought even under historic conditions that prevent its realization outside the spheres of art, Rosa Mayreder does not bow to the psychology of repression or to the relentless sexism of patriarchal society. She reconciles her revolutionary feminist thought with narrative forms to which women have traditionally had access. But she attacks nineteenth century institutions associated with the patriarchal oppression of Viennese society. And her female protagonists...

THE STATUS OF EPISTEMOLOGY IN THE THOUGHT OF MARTIN HEIDEGGER (KNOWLEDGE, ART, PHENOMENOLOGY)

In Martin Heidegger's single minded pursuit of the meaning of Being, he repeatedly dismissed epistemology as short-sighted, inept, and useless. In turn, much of the criticism of Heidegger has centered on the alleged lack of a sufficient epistemological justification for his own claims. Thus, the only possible relationship between Heidegger and epistemology seems to be one of mutual condemnation. This thesis challenges this notion. In Heidegger's view, epistemology is the expression of a reductionistic ontology that infuses the whole Western tradition. Thus, epistemology reduces all Being to mere presence, and forces all knowledge to conform to a single standard. Heidegger condemns epistemology because he can tolerate neither its inadequate ontological premises nor its arrogant epistemological conclusions. To avoid these limitations, the early Heidegger (H I) wanted to found ontology through a phenomenological exhibition of the transcendental structures that make it possible for man to understand Being. The understanding of Being is itself the possibility condition of all forms of knowledge. Therefore, H I was also attempting to found epistemology. Phenomenological "sight" was to provide the knowledge necessary for this founding. However...

It is based on the treatises and tracts Pontano wrote, to which scant attention has been paid until now, but also on his ad hoc political writings and his better known dialogues and poems. It moves between different fields of inquiry including history, philosophy, and literature, trying to represent Pontano's thought not only in its doctrinal aspects, but in a more comprehensive and contextualized perspective. Within this perspective, his thought will appear as mercurial as Pontano himself. It is not a set of explicit, philosophical doctrines that can be described within a coherent theoretical framework, but a cluster of different thoughts, attitudes, and practices.

Furthermore it is also the subject over which different ‘schools’ in the study of history have come to fight over the most. In a similar way as the Revolution of 1789 does in French historiography, the Belgian Revolution invites the Belgian historian, even the most impartial one, to identify him or herself with it (or to reject it). The reason is that the very notion of a modern ‘history of Belgium’, no matter how far it is traced back in history, would not have been thinkable had the Belgian Revolution not occurred. Regardless whether a Belgian identity existed before 1830, a question which has been debated for some time, the existence of Belgium as a modern nation and the Belgian Revolution are wrapped up with each other. It could be argued, from this perspective, that every new study of the Belgian Revolution...

Arendt's notion of human existence as always necessary doing to the world rather than just being is read here from her understanding of man as beginning. It is argued that, as such, it uncovers the existentialist dimension of Arendt's work, by and large neglected in Arendtian literature, while also influencing Arendt's understanding of the political as working freedom out of necessity and taking up of existence. This ultimately constitutes the unexplored contribution by Arendt to contemporary ontology: If ontology if to overcome and move beyond its metaphysical roots, it must ask political questions as the fundamental philosophical questions since it concerns the being that is always necessarily (in) doing. This reading of Arendt's project is founded upon the parallels of her thought with Heidegger's work that proceeds in the same philosophical direction. In order to understand and develop the implications of Arendt's thinking of the political in that direction...

Guidi (Università di Pisa) Prof. Heinz-Gerhard Haupt (European University Institute); During the liberal age, the role of parliaments as mechanisms of diffusion of economic thought became particularly relevant concerning the ongoing process of spread and institutionalisation of political economy. Scholars have acknowledged that 'the sometimes active role played by economists in the political sphere was an essential part of a broader process of dissemination of economic ideas and of institutional consolidation of economic science that took part in the 19th century and continued in later periods, although at various speeds and encountering obstacles of varying degree in different local circumstances'.3 This view explains the recent increase in the production of scientific works concerning not only the institutionalisation of economics in different countries, but also the circulation of ideas, the evolution of the economic thought in diverse nations, and the relationship between ideas and economic policy. This dissertation follows this approach. Specifically...

This study examines Christopher Marlowe’s The Tragicall History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus for evidence of the playwright’s familiarity with the Hermetic thought circulating in Europe during the Renaissance. I begin with a discussion of Marlowe’s life, the origins of the Faust legend, and the sources of the play. Comparison of the conflicting and inadequate answers provided in the sources and the play to contemporary questions about creation and cosmology reveals the choice between faith and reason which Christians faced when God’s word, revealed in the book of Scriptures, conflicted with God’s work revealed in the book of Nature. The Hermetic texts offered both a heliocentric cosmos that was compatible with the new cosmology and a new path to salvation. The study asks if Marlowe’s alleged ‘Atheism’ could more accurately be termed Hermeticism. To explicate Hermeticism I outline the several religions which influenced early Christianity and trace the beliefs which ‘Hermes Trismegistus’ syncretised in the Hermetica in the first centuries of the common era. I note the interest in the Hermetic texts in Europe following the fifteenth century Latin translation made by Marsilio Ficino, and his harmonising of Platonism with Christianity. I provide an overview of the subsequent philosophical attempts to assimilate Jewish Kabbalah to Christianity and both to the Hermetic philosophy...

as been argued that the failure of 'realist' international thought to take root in Britain in the aftermath of the Second World War, as it did in the United States, was a function of declining power. This article challenges this view, suggesting instead that for the British, the term 'realism' had been discredited, in the late 1930s, by its associations with appeasement and the 'power politics' of the dictators. Examining the international thought of politicians and scholars in the years before, during and after the war, this article offers a reinterpretation of the British rejection of political realism.; Ian Hall; The definitive version is available at www.blackwell-synergy.com; Article first published online: 10 NOV 2005

Drawing on topical life histories of physicians in a particularly volatile public health sector environment, we build theory around the contemplation of workplace change. Overall, our study provides evidence as to why single or multiple independent factors, such as pay or job structure, may fail to predict or explain individual decisions to stay in or change workplaces. Instead, the contemplation process we argue is a complex, evolutionary, and context-dependent one that requires individualized interventions. Our findings reveal the prevalence of episodic context-self fit assessments prompted by triggering stimuli, two mechanisms by which thought processes evolved (reinforcement and recalibration), and four characteristic story lines that explain why the thought processes manifested as they did (exploring opportunities, solving problems, reconciling incongruence, and escaping situations). Based on our findings, we encourage practitioners to regularly engage in story-listening and dialogic conversations to better understand, and potentially affect the evolving socially constructed realities of staff members.

The period between the depression of the 1930s and the long post-war boom saw the development of the contemporary shape of the labour movement's economic thought, with its dichotomy between moderate and left nationalist currents. This development is examined in terms of the nature of the main organisations of the labour movement, economic conditions, the ideological proclivities of different classes and the levelof the class struggle. The main areas of economic thought examined are theories of Australia's place in the world economy, the class anatomy of Australian capitalism and of economic crises. During the late 1930s laborites continued to express a longstanding commitment to national development through tariff protection and wariness of overseas loans. Moderate ideas of the possibilities for overcoming class conflicts increasingly displaced radical Money Power theory after the depression. While monetary and real underconsumptionism continued to be the main explanations of economic crises offered by laborites, both ALP politicians and union officials became aware of Keynesian economics and the legitimacy it provided for longstanding Labor policies. The advent of the Popular Front period in the international communist movement saw the Communist Party of Australia move from a revolutionary internationalist towards a politically more conservative left nationalist position...

Every four years since 2004, the Copenhagen Consensus Center has organized and hosted a high profile thought experiment about how a hypothetical extra $75 billion of development assistance money might best be spent to solve twelve of the major crises facing the world today. Collated in this specially commissioned book, a group of more than 50 experts make their cases for investment, discussing how to combat problems ranging from armed conflicts, corruption and trade barriers, to natural disasters, hunger, education and climate change. For each case, 'Alternative Perspectives' are also included to provide a critique and make other suggestions for investment. In addition, a panel of senior economists, including four Nobel Laureates, rank the attractiveness of each policy proposal in terms of its anticipated cost-benefit ratio. This thought-provoking book opens up debate, encouraging readers to come up with their own rankings and decide which solutions are smarter than others.

Introduction The question of the meaning, methods and philosophical manifestations of history is currently rife with contention. The problem that I will address in an exposition of the thought of Wilhelm Dilthey and Martin Heidegger, centers around the intersubjectivity of an historical world. Specifically, there are two interconnected issues. First, since all knowledge occurs to a person from within his or her historical age how can any person in any age make truth claims? In order to answer this concern we must understand the essence and role of history. Yet how can we come to an individual understanding ofwhat history is when the meanings that we use are themselves historically enveloped? But can we, we who are well aware of the knowledge that archaeology has dredged up from old texts or even from 'living' monuments of past ages, really neglect to notice these artifacts that exist within and enrich our world? Charges of wilful blindness would arise if any attempt were made to suggest that certain things of our world did not come down to us from the past. Thus it appears more important 2 to determine what this 'past' is and therefore how history operates than to simply derail the possibility for historical understanding. Wilhelm Dilthey...

The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the application of Cognitive Coaching as a school-based professional development program to improve instructional thought and decision making as well as to enhance staff perceptions, coUegiality and school culture. This topic emerged from personal and professional issues related to the role ofthe reflective practitioner in improving the quality of education, yet cognizant of the fact that little professional development was available to train teachers to become reflective. This case study, positioned within the interpretive sciences, focused on three teachers and how their experiences with cognitive coaching affected their teaching practices. Their knowledge, understanding and use of the four stages of instructional thought (preactive, interactive, reflective and projective) were tested before and at the end of eight coaching cycles, and again after two months to determine whether they had continued to use the reflective process. They were also assessed on whether their attitude towards peer coaching had changed, whether their feelings about teaching had become more positive and whether their professional dialogue had increased. Three methods of data collection were selected to assess growth: interviews...

In preparing the book Art and Space - originally titled Die Kunst und der Raum (1969) - together with the work of Eduardo Chillida, and devote the text written to the sculptor, Heidegger seems to see in the works of Chillida some of his key themes rescued and reunited. This fusion of content and thought was revealed in his dialogue, at another moment, with the poetry of Friedrich Hölderlin. This dissertation aims to present some of the fundamental concepts in Heidegger's work, especially space, place and art; as well as explain the dialogue between these concepts and the works and thoughts of the sculptor Eduardo Chillida. Amongst the main points of this convergence of thought between the philosopher and the sculptor, we can find: the definition of art; the relationship of world and earth; the thinking about the place of art nowadays; and the meanings of interspace, to incorporate and make the space positive; Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior; Ao construir o livro A Arte e o espaço - intitulado originalmente Die Kunst und der Raum (1969) - juntamente com Eduardo Chillida e dedicar o seu texto ao escultor, Heidegger parece ver nas obras de Chillida alguns de seus temas fundamentais resgatados e reunidos. Essa mesma fusão de conteúdo e pensamento Heidegger pareceu encontrar em seu diálogo travado...

Background: Psychosis has various causes, including mania and schizophrenia. Since the differential diagnosis of psychosis is exclusively based on subjective assessments of oral interviews with patients, an objective quantification of the speech disturbances that characterize mania and schizophrenia is in order. In principle, such quantification could be achieved by the analysis of speech graphs. A graph represents a network with nodes connected by edges; in speech graphs, nodes correspond to words and edges correspond to semantic and grammatical relationships. Methodology/Principal Findings: To quantify speech differences related to psychosis, interviews with schizophrenics, manics and normal subjects were recorded and represented as graphs. Manics scored significantly higher than schizophrenics in ten graph measures. Psychopathological symptoms such as logorrhea, poor speech, and flight of thoughts were grasped by the analysis even when verbosity differences were discounted. Binary classifiers based on speech graph measures sorted schizophrenics from manics with up to 93.8% of sensitivity and 93.7% of specificity. In contrast, sorting based on the scores of two standard psychiatric scales (BPRS and PANSS) reached only 62.5% of sensitivity and specificity. Conclusions/Significance: The results demonstrate that alterations of the thought process manifested in the speech of psychotic patients can be objectively measured using graph-theoretical tools...
