Apresentam-se os resultados obtidos no estudo dos ortópteros da bacia do Rio Sabor (Trás-os-Montes, Portugal) realizado durante os anos 1991-2000. Foram identificados 15235 exemplares pertencentes a 64 espécies, 41 géneros e 16 subfamílias. Três das espécies são novas para Portugal, Leptophyes punctatissima, Calliptamus italicus e Chorthippus yersini, quatro são referenciadas pela segunda vez para o território nacional e oito, pela primeira vez para o Norte de Portugal. Finalmente, a região de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro aumenta a sua listagem de espécies de ortópteros com 39 novas referências.

Sensory proprieties of the honeys are amongst the main parameters for its quality determination, with sensory analysis working as a tool for measurement and quantification of the product characteristics by human senses. Sensorial quality control considers attributes as color, scent, flavor and consistency. These attributes are always interlinked and depend on volatile substances that are related to the original scents of flowers where the nectar was collected. Scent and flavor are directly related to honey’s color and mainly depend on its floral origin. This work had the objective to discern the sensory profiles of Apis mellifera honey produced by familiar farmers from the Iguape bay, in Bahia, Brazil. A total of 11 A. mellifera honey samples were obtained from beekeepers and processed in the Laboratory of the Nucleus for Insect Studies (INSECTA) of the Centro de Ciências Agrárias, Ambientais e Biológicas at Universidade Federal do Recôncavo da Bahia in Cruz das Almas, Bahia. The sensorial analysis performed by the 50 consumers, revealed that the acceptance of honey was higher in the Caonge’s community and significantly different from the obtained in the Engenho Vitória’s community.

Despite the existence of two old, but well known, publications that cite Portuguese localities for the Sialidae (McLachlan, 1880; Navás, 1908), all more recent faunal works fail to report this family from Portugal (e.g., Monserrat, 1986; Aspöck et al., 2001; Aspöck & Aspöck, 2011). A mosca-branca é um dos insetos mais prejudiciais à cultura do feijoeiro, devido principalmente à intensa sucção de seiva e à transmissão do vírus do mosaico dourado. O uso de cultivares resistentes ao inseto é uma ferramenta importante no seu controle. Ensaios foram conduzidos em laboratório, avaliando-se aspectos biológicos de Bemisia tabaci biótipo B para os seguintes genótipos de feijoeiro: Arc 3s, Arc 5s, G13028, G11056, Arc 1 e Porrillo 70. As plantas (estágio IV-1) foram infestadas por moscas-brancas durante um dia e os ovos e ninfas foram observados até a emergência dos adultos. A longevidade e a fecundidade dos insetos emergidos também foram avaliadas. Ninfas alimentadas no genótipo Arc 3s (26,5 dias) tiveram o período de desenvolvimento mais longo, seguidas de G11056 (25,9 dias) e G13028 (25,3 dias). Houve um alongamento de 5,5 dias no período de desenvolvimento dos insetos em Arc 3s quando comparado com Porrillo 70. Altas taxas de mortalidade das ninfas nos genótipos Arc 3s e G11056 (94,7 e 83,1%, respectivamente) indicam que tais materiais podem apresentar resistência do tipo não-preferência para alimentação e/ou antibiose. Three soybean experiments, one for each maturation group (early, semi-early, and medium), were installed in the field in Assis, State of São Paulo, during the 2003/2004 growing season to evaluate damage caused by Anticarsia gemmatalis (Hubn.) and by the soybean stink bug complex, Euschistus heros (F.), Piezodorus guildinii (West.), and Nezara viridula (L.). The experiments were installed again in 2004/2005, with the exception of the early cycle group. Defoliation caused by A. gemmatalis was evaluated by the percentage estimate of leaf area cut in the first year only, due to low caterpillar infestations in 2004/2005. All three stink bug species were present in both growing seasons. In 2003/2004, E. heros was predominant over the other two; in the following year, all three species occurred in similar numbers. The productivity criterion was adopted to evaluate stink bug damage. Based on both growing seasons and mainly considering productivity, a few lines could be selected within each maturation group for new field studies or for hybridizations in breeding programs. O trabalho objetivou testar protocolos de extração de DNA e caracterizar populações de Tibraca limbativentris, Stål, importante inseto-praga do arroz. Os insetos foram coletados em Joinville, Rio do Oeste e Turvo, em Santa Catarina, e Agudo, Uruguaiana, Pelotas e Palmares do Sul, no Rio Grande do Sul. Testaram-se seis protocolos de extração de DNA citados na literatura, e um novo protocolo adequado à espécie em questão. DNA de dez indivíduos de cada população foi extraído usando o melhor protocolo e reações de RAPD foram realizadas com dez iniciadores. O novo protocolo mostrou os melhores resultados e foi utilizado nas reações de PCR, que geraram 151 bandas polimórficas, permitindo acessar diferenças genéticas entre todas as populações; não ocorreram indivíduos de uma população agrupados com os de outra. A maior similaridade intrapopulacional foi encontrada em Uruguaiana (22%), e a menor em Palmares do Sul (50%), também a população mais divergente das demais. O valor Gst foi 0,5215, e de Nm 0,4588; esses valores refletem a pouca similaridade entre as populações. O menor Nm foi apresentado quando Palmares do Sul e Pelotas foram incluídos nas comparações, em consonância com a maior divergência apresentada por essas populações em relação às outras. São registradas 116 espécies de Cerambycidae para o Maranhão: Prioninae, seis, Cerambycinae, 61 e Lamiinae, 49. Do total, 97 espécies configuram-se como novo registro. A maioria das espécies ocorre em dois ou mais domínios morfoclimáticos do Brasil. Espécies novas descritas em Lamiinae: Punctozotroctes inhamum sp. nov. (Acanthoderini) e Oncideres coites sp. nov. de Caxias; Oncideres mirador sp. nov. (Onciderini) de Mirador.; A total of 116 species are recoded: Prioninae, 6, Cerambycinae, 61 and Lamiinae, 49. Ninety seven species are recorded for the first time in Maranhão. The majority of the species belongs to two or more morphoclimatic domains of Brazil. Stingless bees exhibit extraordinary variation in nest architecture within and among species. To test for phylogenetic association of behavioral traits for species of the Neotropical stingless bee genus Trigona s.s., a phylogenetic hypothesis was generated by combining sequence data of 24 taxa from one mitochondrial (16S rRNA) and four nuclear gene fragments (long-wavelength rhodopsin copy 1 (opsin), elongation factor-1 alpha copy F2, arginine kinase, and 28S rRNA). Fifteen characteristics of the nest architecture were coded and tested for phylogenetic association. Several characters have significant phylogenetic signal, including type of nesting substrate, nest construction material, and hemipterophily, the tending of hemipteroid insects in exchange for sugar excretions. Phylogenetic independent habits encountered in Trigona s.s. include coprophily and necrophagy.

The results presented in this paper refer to a host survey, lasting approximately three and a half years (February 2003-july 2006), undertaken in the Vale do Rio Doce Natural Reserve, a remnant area of the highly endangered Atlantic Rain Forest located in Linhares County, State of Espirito Santo, Brazil. A total of 330 fruit samples were collected from native plants, representing 248 species and 51 plant families. Myrtaceae was the most diverse family with 54 sampled species. Twenty-eight plant species, from ten families, are hosts of ten Anastrepha species and of Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann). Among 33 associations between host plants and fruit flies, 20 constitute new records, including the records of host plants for A. fumipennis Lima and A. nascimentoi Zucchi. The findings were discussed in the light of their implications for rain forest conservation efforts and the study of evolutionary relationships between fruit flies and their hosts.

The advance of agricultural frontier may cause the Cerrado (Brazilian savanna) to disappear before 2030. This work focuses on measuring the impact of pasture implantation on a cerrado`s termite fauna. Termites were sampled in a cerrado sensu stricto and a pasture, originally cerrado. All species were classified as their feeder group, accumulation curves were made and Shannon-Wiener indexes and beta diversity were calculated for both areas. Cerrado was richer than pasture and species composition differed considerably, leading beta diversity to a high value. The humivorous was the most representative species, followed by grass/litter feeders, xylophagous and, less representative, the intermediates. There were more xylophagous and intermediates species on cerrado than in pasture; the grass/litter feeders were more abundant in pasture, but didn`t differed in number or species; and humivorous didn`t differed neither in richness nor in abundance. Evaluation of the aquatic macroinvertebrate community as a tool for monitoring a reservoir in the Pitangui river basin, Parana, Brazil. Benthic and nektonic macroinvertebrates play an important role in the structure and function of aquatic ecosystems and their distribution is influenced by chemical features of the substrate, vegetation composition, and water depth. Knowledge on the fauna contributes to the assessment of water quality and development of biodiversity conservation activities. Different biotic factors affecting the invertebrate community were evaluated in the Alagados reservoir, the main water source of the city of Ponta Grossa, Parana. In five different sampling points, 18,473 specimens of aquatic or semiaquatic macroinvertebrates were collected, belonging to 46 taxa of the phylla Annelida (Hirudinea and Oligochaeta), Mollusca (Gastropoda), Platyhelminthes (Turbellaria), Nematoda and Arthropoda (Arachnida, Crustacea and Insecta). This community was composed mainly of predators (45.7% of the taxa sampled), collectors and/or filterers (23.9%), scrapers (15.2%), shredders (13.0%) and detritivores (2.2%). The taxonomic composition and diversity of assemblages of Ephemeroptera nymphs of four lotic environments in the central region of State of Rio Grande do Sul, a subtropical area in southern Brazil, were evaluated. Samplings were done monthly, with a Surber sampler, from June 2001 to May 2002, in the Jacui River and three of its tributaries. The total number of nymphs collected in the four sampling sites was 11,007 in five families and 19 genera, of these, 11 are new records for the State. The highest diversity occurred in Point 4 (H` = 2.41) and the lowest in Point 2 (H` = 1.69). Point 4 had the highest environmental stability, conservation of the riparian vegetation and the lowest anthropic impact, while Point 2 presented a large environmental simplification due to a direct anthropic influence ( e. g. domestic sewerage, trampling by cattle). The diversity of nymphs observed in the total area is high, compared to the estimated maximum theoretical diversity; a result of the high evenness and richness recorded. Rarefaction curves, calculated for a sample of 1,018 specimens, showed a similar expectation of richness for the four sampling sites. Tipulomorpha (craneflies) comprise one of the largest subgroups of Diptera, but its phylogeny at different levels has been poorly explored. This study presents the most comprehensive cladistic analysis of the group ever made, with emphasis on the genera and subgenera of the subfamily Limnophilinae (Limoniidae), assumed to include some of the earliest lineages of Tipulomorpha sensu stricto and therefore important for the understanding of the early patterns in the evolution of the craneflies. Eighty-eight characters of the male imago were scored for 104 exemplar species. The most parsimonious trees were searched using implied weighting, in the framework of a sensitivity analysis with different values of k (2 to 6). The dataset based on the characters of adult male morphology showed high levels of homoplasy and yielded very incongruent and unstable phylogenetic results, which are very sensitive to changes in analytical parameters. In the preferred and most parsimonious phylogenetic hypothesis, the Pediciidae is the sister-group of all other Tipulomorpha sensu stricto. The morphology and development of the digestive tract of insects has been extensively studied, but little attention has been given to the development of the rectal pads. These organs are responsible for absorption of water and salts. In insects where they occur, there are usually six ovoid rectal pads located in the medial-anterior portion of the rectum. The rectal pad has three types of cells: principal, basal, and junctional. The arrangement of these three cell types delimits an intrapapillary lumen. The aim of the current study is to describe the development of the rectal pads during postembryonic development of Melipona quadrifasciata anthidioides and Melipona scutellaris. Specimens were analyzed at the following developmental stages: white-, pink-, brown-, and black-eyed pupae, and adult workers. The development of the rectal pad begins as a thickening of the epithelium in white-eyed pupae at 54 hr. At this stage, there is neither a basal cell layer nor intrapapillary lumen. The basal layers begin to form in the pink-eyed pupa and are completely formed at the end of the development of the brown-eyed pupa. In the brown-eyed pupal stage, the intrapapillary lumen is formed and the junctional cells are positioned and completely differentiated. Modem production systems accommodate broody hens in high densities, leading to the accumulation of excrement under the cages. This substrate is excellent for the development of sinantropic flies. Thus, the accomplishment of surveys in these places becomes essential, in order to plan better strategies of control. The present work aimed at studying the entornofauna and the seasonality of the species of dipterous present in the Crisdan poultry house located in the Municipality of Sao Joao da Boa Vista, the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. In the period of January of 2001 to December of 2002, 1,012,595 flies were captured using the ""jug-trap"". The species were identified: Drosophi-la repleta (Wollaston, 1858), Musca domestica (Linnaeus, 1758), Ophyra spp., Hennetria illucens (Linnaeus, 1758), Fannia canicularis (Linnaeus, 1761), Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius, 1794), and Sepsidae. More frequently D. repleta and M. domestica had added 99.47% of the dipterous. Increased rainfall and the collection months influenced the sampling of dipterous (P < 0.05). Drosophila repleta was the most abundant species, representing 91% of all captured flies. However, this diptera did not develop at the surveyed site since immatures were not captured therein.

Mature larva and pupa of Macrolygistopterus subparallelus Pic are described and compared to known Calochromini immatures. Larvae were collected alive inside dead trunk in the Atlantic Forest at Estacao Biologica de Boraceia, Salesopolis, Sao Paulo, Brazil. They were maintained in laboratory conditions, and the pupal period was 12 days (one observation). The pupa of this genus is described for the first time. The present study describes different preimaginal stages of Trypoxylon rogenhoferi examined by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and compares the results with observations on closely related species. Some notes on the nesting habits of this species, including their spider prey, nest parasites, and development time are provided. In short, T. rogenhoferi proved quite similar to the previous report on T. albitarse although SEM images are rarely presented in such descriptions. In fact the present study emphasized the importance of SEM images to describe fine morphological details that can be useful characters for taxonomic and phylogenetic studies. A full checklist of the species of Telebasis Selys, 1865, housed in the Brazilian collections Colecao Entomologica Prof. Jose Alfredo Pinheiro Dutra, Departamento de Zoologia, Instituto de Biologia, Universidade Federal do Rio do Janeiro (DZRJ), and Museu de Zoologia, Universidade de Sao Paulo (MZSP) is presented. A total of 325 specimens representing 19 species were studied. Ten new records for Brazilian States were found for T. carmesina Calvert, 1909 (Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul), T. corallina (Selys, 1876) (Pernambuco), T. demarara (Williamson, 1917) (Maranhao), T. filiola (Perty, 1834) (Paraiba and Santa Catarina), T. gigantea Daigle, 2002 (Sao Paulo), T. inalata (Calvert, 1961) (Mato Grosso do Sul), T. pallida Machado, 2010 (Goias) and T. obsoleta (Selys, 1876) (Mato Grosso do Sul), as well as a new record of T. carminita Calvert, 1909 for Suriname. Telebasis pallida Machado, 2010 is redescribed and diagnosed based on 14 males collected near the type locality, and its genital ligula is described and illustrated for the first time. Furthermore, the status of the three species of the Telebasis racenisi Bick & Bick, 1995 complex is evaluated. The Neotropical genus Anacroneuria (Perlidae) is represented by more than 300 species. Among the Brazilian Anacroneuria, only the nymphs of two species have been described. In this paper, we described the nymph of A. ofaye Froehlich and an apparatus for rearing this genus. El trabajo presente consiste en un análisis y evaluación de la literatura sobre la evolución e interrelación de los órdenes de los insectos, dando como resultado las siguientes conclusiones: 1) Nuestros conocimientos actuales parecen indicar que los artrópodos más cercanos a 105 insectos son los miriápodos, de los cuales los Symphyla poseen el mayor número de caracteres en común con los insectos primitivos. Esto parece sugerir que Insecta y Symphyla se derivaron de un tronco común, formado de artrópodos de tipo miriápodo. Hay evidencia también de que los insectos pueden haberse originado por medio de neotenia de dicho tronco común. 2) La tendencia reciente de excluir los apterigotos entognatos de la clase Insecta no parece estar bien justificada. 3) Investigaciones recientes indican que los apterigotos entognatos (Protura, Collembola y Diplura) están interrelacionados. 4) En vista de que las diferencias entre lepismátidos y maquílidos incluyen varias características de gran importancia filogenética (Cuadro 1), se considera que forman dos órdenes: Microcoryphia, que comprende a los maquílidos, y Thysanura propiamente dichos, o sea los lepismátidos. 5) El origen de los pterigotos aun continúa sin solución. 6) De todos los grupos vivientes de Pterygota los Ephemeroptera parecen ser los más primitivos.
