This paper examines a modern composition for male vocal quartet — “Eu quero olhar”...

Abstract

Exploring two main lines of inquiry, this dissertation investigates the style and aesthetic of the music of Joseph Joachim (1831-1907) and its references to composers such as Brahms, Liszt, Schumann, and Beethoven. First, rather than simply accepting the image of Joachim as the great nineteenth-century violinist and collaborator of Johannes Brahms who advocated the "canonization of the music of Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms," I ask who Joachim was in light of his own compositions and literary circle. Especially significant was his "soul mate" Gisela von Arnim (daughter of Bettine von Arnim), from the second generation of two major literary "institutions" - the Grimm brothers and Arnim/Brentano, the Des Knaben Wunderhorn-collectors. Joachim and Gisela's literary role-play throws light on her function as his inspiration and muse. Second, each chapter investigates Joachim's works as "psychological music," the term he himself applied. Given that psychology was not yet an established academic discipline in the 1850s, Joachim's use of "psychological" is all the more intriguing.

Sources including archival letters, manuscripts, and Joachim's published correspondence, as well as his compositions from (or begun) in the 1850s...

The Billboard Hot 100 has been the main record chart for popular music in the American music industry since its first official release in 1958. Today, this rank- ing is based upon the frequency of which a song is played on the radio, streamed online, and its sales. Over time, however, the limitations of the chart have become more pronounced and record labels have tried different strategies to maximize a song’s potential on the chart in order to increase sales and success. This paper intends to analyze metadata and audio analysis features from a random sample of one million popular tracks, dating back to 1922, and assess their potential on the Billboard Hot 100 list. We compare the results of Bayesian Additive Regression Trees (BART) to other decision tree methods for predictive accuracy. Through the use of such trees, we can determine the interaction and importance of differ- ent variables over time and their effects on a single’s success on the Billboard chart. With such knowledge, we can assess and identify past music trends, and provide producers with the steps to create the ‘perfect’ commercially successful song, ultimately removing the creative artistry from music making.; Honors Thesis

Daniel Stevens; The words of the Torah (the Hebrew Bible) have markings below them, added by the Masoretes in the 8th century. These markings are musical symbols that accentuate and connect the words. Over time, cantors of the sacred text in different communities and geographical locations have developed a variety of musical interpretations of these musical symbols, such that no single or definitive interpretation exists. Given this variety of interpretation, what musical qualities of these cantillations, and later musical settings of these same texts, allow the music to be identified as Jewish? Further, what are the qualities of a Jewish performance of the text? This thesis aims to relate disparate musical settings and performances of particular texts to one another in relation to the symbols in the Torah in order to better understand the complex relationships of text, music, performance, and community that are enacted through performance of each musical work.; Music Theory

Suzanne Burton; Professional development for music teachers often occurs in short, unrelated workshops-rarely enacting change in practice. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to investigate elements that contribute to effective, sustained professional development for music teachers. Specifically, this study is an examination of the efficacy of a 90 clock-hour, immersion-based professional development cluster on steel pan through the unique lens of flow theory. According to Csikszentmihalyi (1991), flow is considered to be an optimal state in which skill and perceived level of challenge match. In the present study, music teachers??? (N=33) experiences in the steel drum professional development cluster were documented. The cluster was a 5-day period in which music teachers were immersed in learning how to play and teach steel pan. Data sources were participants??? daily journal reflections (N=137 entries), videotaped rehearsals (13 hours), interviews (N=7), and results from a follow-up satisfaction survey (N=25; 65% return). Csikszentmihalyi???s indicators of flow were used to code the data. Prevailing indicators of flow found to exist for the participants were immediate feedback, chance for completion, and high levels of interest/motivation. Findings suggest that the immersion context fostered participants??? growth in knowledge and skill for playing and teaching steel pan. Findings also suggest that immersion-based professional development promotes flow and has many attributes of an effective professional development paradigm.; Music Education

Sampling poses an interesting problem in markets with experience goods. Free samples reveal product quality and help consumers to make informed purchase decisions (promotional effect). However, sampling may also induce consumers to substitute purchases with free consumption (displacement effect). We study this trade-o_ in the market for digital music where consumers can sample the quality of songs by watching free music videos online. Identification comes from a natural experiment in Germany, where virtually all videos that contain music are blocked on a popular video platform due to a legal dispute with representatives of the rights-holders. We show that promotional and displacement effects cancel out in the sales performance of individual songs, whereas online music videos trigger sales of albums.

The composer has historically been at the top of the tree in the music industry; most royalties due to artists flow back to composers/songwriters rather than performers. Over the last few decades, the enactment of stronger performers’ rights has sought to redress this historical imbalance by providing performers with, amongst a number of economic and moral rights, the right to receive compensation for the exploitation of their performances. However, this article explores the fact that there may be cases where performers may be ‘authors’ for the purpose of copyright, as opposed to performers’ rights. Some original works of joint authorship – musical arrangements – may not have been traditionally recognised as such within the music industry. For instance, with regard to the making of arrangements by a group of musicians, it appears from recent UK case law that as long as a performing musician makes an original contribution to the creation of an arrangement, he or she will be a joint-author of the resulting work. As a result of this, the performing musician is deserving of a share of copyright in that arrangement, and by analogy, a share of licensing revenue from the exploitation of the arrangement. However, this conclusion appears to be slightly at odds with historical practices within the music industry. Furthermore...

This paper studies the growing trends in conscious music in Iran, which emerged in the 1990s. It provides a brief historical overview of changes in conscious music in Iran since the Constitutional Revolution of 1905. Within thecontext of the current status of music in the country, the research then focuses on three conscious trends: rock, fusion and classical Persian music. This music, which is part of a broader intellectual and artistic wave, represents the needs and views of a diverse young population as well as society as a whole. Based on interviews with musicians and on content analysis of lyrics, the paper highlights the dominant concerns and lyrical themes within each trend as well as the commonalities. The strategies, language and approach of these three trends are not uniform. However, they follow the same path: awakening; challenging old dogmas and clichés; and launching critical debate within a global context.

The increasing interest in the cultural economy is part of an attempt to invent new industrial development strategies that comprises a capacity to transform locations. In policy-making, the cultural economy is commonly framed from an economic perspective that salutes the role of the cultural economy and the dynamics of entrepreneurship in processes of urban and regional developments. Moreover, explorations of cultural economy and entrepreneurship are mainly represented by studies of Europe and North America. This thesis departs from such a normative perspective, and critically examines the links between a situated music economy, its cultural entrepreneurs and social change in West Africa. The empirical investigation of West African hip hop musical practitioners is framed by the notion of “community of practice”. The situated practices of these cultural workers and their music production ecology are investigated – methodologically – from a grounded perspective in order to grasp the originality of their materiality and aesthetics. The empirical focus of this thesis research is Dakar, one Francophone West African urban locale, which is contrasted with the ‘test case’ site of Ouagadougou. The case study locations are ‘experientially situated’...

Impression-based music retrieval is the best way to find pieces of music that suit the preferences, senses, or mental states of users. A natural language interface (NLI) is more useful and effective than a graphical user interface for impression-based music retrieval since an NLI interprets users' spontaneous input sentences to represent musical impressions and generates query vectors for music retrieval. Existing impression-based music retrieval systems, however, have no dialogue capabilities for modifying the most recently used query vector. We evaluated a natural language dialogue system we developed that deals not only with 164 impression words but also with 14 comparative expressions, such as "a little more" and "more and more," and, if necessary, modifies the most recently used query vector through a dialogue. We also evaluated performance using 35 participants to determine the effectiveness of our dialogue system.

I explore the role and value of African music in education, by drawing from a study of Grade 5 learners at a school in the Eastern Cape, which was designed to answer the question: Could Xhosa children in South Africa sing Xhosa indigenous songs significantly better than European folk songs? The experimental group received instruction in Xhosa indigenous songs accompanied by indigenous instruments. Instruction included traditional dancing, antiphonal singing technique and improvisation. The control group received instruction in European folk song singing accompanied by Orff instruments. The results of the study suggest that the Xhosa children sang the Xhosa repertoire expressively and significantly better than the European songs. Based on the findings, I argue for the inclusion of African music in education. The purpose of the research was to determine whether there is any significant development in the cognitive, psychomotor and affective skills of learners when taught African music as opposed to western European music. The aim was also to assist educators with meaningful pedagogical approaches and alternative methodologies to enhance an inclusive learning and cultural experience in music education.

The desire for the ineffable: On the myth of music as absolute

This article proposes to establish and critique connections between religious and musico-aesthetic conceptions of in-effability by exploring the link between neoplatonic thought and romantic aesthetics. The central thesis is that recourse to the ineffable is often made by resorting to theological tenets and, consequently, that romantic aesthetics, although desperately trying to disengage itself from theological thinking, can in fact be interpreted as being inextricably bound up with it. Taking Plotinus' conception of the relationship between the "One" and "Intellect" as model, the romantic conception of the absolute is revealed to be a fallacy. It is shown that claims of the ineffability of music not only locate music as a false absolute, but also confer on music a quasi-religious authority. This results in an ungrounded secular faith in the power of music and the mastery of its composer-god to lead mankind to the truth. Untangling the myths of ineffability leads the way to a detranscendentalised conception of music with performance at its centre.
