Language has been defined as a joint of symbolic expresions, an organized system of signs, a cultural product that gives us a code to 'translate' knowledge. Therefore, language is a necessary condition to create culture and to let communication to state between all of the human beings. In that way, as far as you can learn a language into a linguistic community, you also can learn how to 'read' images into certain cultural context. There is a mutual interchange relationship between literary language, artistic language and culture. On the other hand, arts is maybe the greatest way to express feelings, because it means dialogue and direct communication between all human beings, even if people speak different languages. The essay shows how the aesthetic predominant values in a culture have a bearing on the acceptance or rejection of certain products, independently of their practical functionality. The specific case is that of the printing of Gutenberg, which does not reach acceptance in the Japan of the XVIIth century, because the ideals of perfection and production that the western printing represents, collide with the aesthetic conceptions of the Japanese chiropraxis.; El ensayo muestra cómo los valores estéticos predominantes en una cultura inciden en la aceptación o el rechazo de ciertos productos, independientemente de su funcionalidad práctica. The purpose of this article is to discuss the ethical and political problems that we face when we think of transgenic art. This study examines the cult of Our Lady of Remedios from an art-historical perspective. Choosing this specific cult statue as a case study is not arbitrary: Remedios is among the oldest Marian images in the New World and was named first patroness of Mexico City in 1574, when the city council became the patron of her shrine and a confraternity was founded to better disseminate the cult. As a result, the statue was carried fifty-seven times through the streets of New Spain's capital in three hundred years (an average of one procession every five years), thus outnumbering any other religious event that was not part of the liturgical calendar. The fame of Our Lady of Remedios was closely linked to her role as Socia Belli of the Spanish army, as she was believed to have protected Hernán Cortés and his allies during the conquest of Mexico-Tenochtitlán in 1520-21. Her character as protector in times of war was enhanced in the centuries to come, when she was called to the city on every occasion when the Spanish Crown was involved in military campaigns. Her protection, however, was mainly requested in times of drought and epidemics, a reason for which her fame as protectress of the city grew intensively, and all sectors of society (Spanish...

The natural beauty of coral reefs attracts millions of tourists worldwide resulting in substantial revenues for the adjoining economies. Although their visual appearance is a pivotal factor attracting humans to coral reefs current monitoring protocols exclusively target biogeochemical parameters, neglecting changes in their aesthetic appearance. Here we introduce a standardized computational approach to assess coral reef environments based on 109 visual features designed to evaluate the aesthetic appearance of art. The main feature groups include color intensity and diversity of the image, relative size, color, and distribution of discernable objects within the image, and texture. Specific coral reef aesthetic values combining all 109 features were calibrated against an established biogeochemical assessment (NCEAS) using machine learning algorithms. These values were generated for ∼2,100 random photographic images collected from 9 coral reef locations exposed to varying levels of anthropogenic influence across 2 ocean systems. Aesthetic values proved accurate predictors of the NCEAS scores (root mean square error < 5 for N ≥ 3) and significantly correlated to microbial abundance at each site. This shows that mathematical approaches designed to assess the aesthetic appearance of photographic images can be used as an inexpensive monitoring tool for coral reef ecosystems. It further suggests that human perception of aesthetics is not purely subjective but influenced by inherent reactions towards measurable visual cues. By quantifying aesthetic features of coral reef systems this method provides a cost efficient monitoring tool that targets one of the most important socioeconomic values of coral reefs directly tied to revenue for its local population.

How do external stimuli and our internal state coalesce to create the distinctive aesthetic pleasures that give vibrance to human experience? Neuroaesthetics has so far focused on the neural correlates of observing beautiful stimuli compared to neutral or ugly stimuli, or on neural correlates of judging for beauty as opposed to other judgments. Our group questioned whether this approach is sufficient. In our view, a brain region that assesses beauty should show beauty-level-dependent activation during the beauty judgment task, but not during other, unrelated tasks. We therefore performed an fMRI experiment in which subjects judged visual textures for beauty, naturalness and roughness. Our focus was on finding brain activation related to the rated beauty level of the stimuli, which would take place exclusively during the beauty judgment. An initial whole-brain analysis did not reveal such interactions, yet a number of the regions showing main effects of the judgment task or the beauty level of stimuli were selectively sensitive to beauty level during the beauty task. Of the regions that were more active during beauty judgments than roughness judgments, the frontomedian cortex and the amygdala demonstrated the hypothesized interaction effect...

The purpose of this essay is to provide the reader with a brief overview of several recent person-artifact-context relational models that explain the complex interaction of the processes that underlie an ongoing aesthetic experience with visual art forms. Recent progress towards a comprehensive understanding of these processes has been made possible in large part by experimental approaches that take advantage of recent advances in computer technology and electronic sophistication. To illustrate this point, three experimental techniques at the forefront of the field of experimental aesthetics are highlighted here. They include the investigation of viewers— body postural adjustments to depicted pictorial depth and movement in paintings; the use of hand-held computers known as personal data assistants to record audience members— on-going emotional reactions to live performances of dance; and the contribution of audio tour information to museum visitors— interaction with and aesthetic evaluation of sculptures and paintings. Finally, the eMotion: Mapping Museum Experience project, which has the potential to make a tremendous contribution to the understanding of the complex interaction of factors that contribute to a museum visitor's experience...

Aim Acceptable facial aesthetics is a common desire among patients presenting with dentofacial deformities planning to undergo orthognathic surgeries. Thus, professionals must be alert to their patients' complaints as well as their desires regarding facial morphology, because this is quite subjective and personal. This research aimed at evaluating the different views of orthodontists and oral maxillofacial surgeons regarding the facial analysis of patients who undergo orthognathic surgery.

It is thought in the theory and philosophy of law, aimed at discussing the conditions of possibility of rapprochement between the art form and legal form. The text investigates, dialectically, the implications for the legal philosophy of the impossibility of such approximation, and the problems in a conservative approximation. It follows that: 1) would be a loss for a reason and therefore to legal philosophy, not to communicate between art and law; 2) the relationship between legal and aesthetic standards should be guided by the critical, especially in terms of Adorno's thought. It is by overcoming the dichotomy between possibility and impossibility, opening on the idea of constellation of methodological categorical fields of law and aesthetics in their current forms, paving the way for understanding the legal form as a tragic way.

Supernumerary teeth are common changes in the human dentition that can compromise a congruous dental and facial growth and development. Early diagnosis and proper treatment of these developmental changes are essential for establishing occlusal, functional, and aesthetic congruence. Thus, this article reports the functional and aesthetic rehabilitation of a supernumerary peg-shaped tooth located in the anterior maxillary region of a preschooler. The tooth was restored directly using nanocomposite resin system, a putty index of the incisal position, and modified cotton roll isolation. This minimally invasive procedure not only allows future adjustment but also perfect control of the rehabilitation and simultaneous reestablishment of the child's self-esteem and tooth aesthetics and function. However, treatment should not be limited to the restorative technique. Maintenance of oral health and arch integrity are essential for the correct transition between the primary and permanent dentitions, preventing the treatment from affecting the permanent dentition.

Assim, utilizei fontes impressas, imagéticas, entrevistas e observações durante a prática do trabalho do ator. This study aims to build a reflection on the embodiment process of transgender characters and theatrical constructions of a gay actor from his real life body (conjugate). This article relates the trajectories of children’s music making to the Estética do Impreciso e do Paradoxal (Aesthetics of the Imprecise and Paradoxical), proposed by the German musician Hans Joachim Koellreutter (1915-2005) and to the concepts of musicality and sonority suggested by the French composer Pierre Schaeffer (1910-1995). Such an analysis, which is included in the doctoral thesis that I defended for the Communications and Semiotics Program at the Pontifical University of São Paulo (2007), proposes to expand discussions and thought regarding children’s relationship to sounds and music, aiming to validate and signify the routes of such occurrences. Reporting back to the concept of mino literature proposed by Gilles Deleuze (1925-1995) and Félix Guattari (1930-1992), the article points towards a minor mode of thinking about/making music in early childhood: a singular mode that reveals the singularity and dynamic transformation of the ideas of music, considering the gains in complexity that surround the process of development as a whole. A mode that is captured by the great systems that are dominant in a culture’s music production, as well as the territories of music education. In conclusion, I point towards the need to institute open-ended plans that dialogue with tradition...

This dissertation traces the development of Hugo von Hofmannsthal's attempts to find solutions to what he perceived to be the crisis of meaning in his time. I focus primarily on Hofmannsthal's fictional letters and poetological reflections from the post-lyrical phase of his career, also touching on his final drama and political speeches. In the 1990s semiotic, structuralist, and poststructuralist studies of Hofmannsthal's texts allowed critics to uncover the more radically modern dimension of his creative process and work, making possible a poetological turn in the scholarship, with critics becoming far more interested in the poetics and aesthetics of Hofmannsthal's writings. Thanks to this work, a very different image of Hofmannsthal has appeared - one that attempts to overcome the common prejudice against the author as an elitist and cultural conservative who was out of step with his time. This dissertation participates in the latest approach to Hofmannsthal's work inasmuch as it largely focuses on Hofmannsthal's self-reflexive poetological writings from the Erfundene Gespräche und Briefe and on the author's intermedial search for a language that can counteract the reification of language in a positivistic age. The central argument of this dissertation is that the crises of language...
