An Algorithm for Cold Patch Detection in the Sea off Northeast Taiwan Using Multi-Sensor Data

Multi-sensor data from different satellites are used to identify an upwelling area in the sea off northeast Taiwan. Sea surface temperature (SST) data derived from infrared and microwave, as well as sea surface height anomaly (SSHA) data derived from satellite altimeters are used for this study. An integration filtering algorithm based on SST data is developed for detecting the cold patch induced by the upwelling. The center of the cold patch is identified by the maximum negative deviation relative to the spatial mean of a SST image within the study area and its climatological mean of each pixel. The boundary of the cold patch is found by the largest SST gradient. The along track SSHA data derived from satellite altimeters are then used to verify the detected cold patch. Applying the detecting algorithm, spatial and temporal characteristics and variations of the cold patch are revealed. The cold patch has an average area of 1.92 × 104 km2. Its occurrence frequencies are high from June to October and reach a peak in July. The mean SST of the cold patch is 23.8 °C. In addition to the annual and the intraseasonal fluctuation with main peak centered at 60 days, the cold patch also has a variation period of about 4.7 years in the interannual timescale. This implies that the Kuroshio variations and long-term and large scale processes playing roles in modifying the cold patch occurrence frequency.

Epilepsy is a disorder characterized by excessive synchronized neural activity. The hippocampus and surrounding temporal lobe structures appear particularly sensitive to epileptiform activity. Somatostatin (SST)-positive interneurons within the hilar region have been suggested to gate hippocampal activity, and therefore may play a crucial role in the dysregulation of hippocampal activity. In this study, we examined SST interneuron activity in the in vitro 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) model of epilepsy. We employed a multi-disciplinary approach, combining extracellular multi-electrode array (MEA) recordings with patch-clamp recordings and optical imaging using a genetically encoded calcium sensor. We observed that hilar SST interneurons are strongly synchronized during 4-AP-induced local field potentials (LFPs), as assayed by Ca2+ imaging as well as juxtacellular or intracellular recording. SST interneurons were particularly responsive to GABA-mediated LFPs that occurred in the absence of ionotropic glutamatergic transmission. Our results present evidence that the extensive synchronized activity of SST-expressing interneurons contribute to the generation of GABAergic LFPs in an in vitro model of temporal lobe seizures.

[Purpose] This study aimed to clarify the effects of therapeutic ultrasound on range of motion and stretch pain and the relationships between the effects. [Subjects] The subjects were 15 healthy males. [Methods] Subjects performed all three interventions: (1) ultrasound (US group), (2) without powered ultrasound (placebo group), and (3) rest (control group). Ultrasound was applied at 3 MHz with an intensity of 1.0 W/cm2 and a 100% duty cycle for 10 minutes. The evaluation indices were active and passive range of motion (ROM), stretch pain (visual analog scale; VAS), and skin surface temperature (SST). The experimental protocol lasted a total of 40 minutes; this was comprised of 10 minutes before the intervention, 10 minutes during the intervention (US, placebo, and control), and 20 minutes after the intervention. [Results] ROM and SST were significantly higher in the US group than in the placebo and control groups for the 20 minutes after ultrasound, though there was no change in stretch pain. [Conclusion] The effects of ultrasound on ROM and SST were maintained for 20 minutes after the intervention. The SST increased with ultrasound and decreased afterwards. Sclerosing stromal tumor (SST) of the ovary is a rare tumor derived from the sex cord stroma. This tumor was first described by Chalvaridjian and Scully in 1973. SST of the ovary is prevalence of 1.5% to 6% of ovarian stromal tumors. Patients are most commonly diagnosed in their 20s and 30s. There have been reports of SST postmenopausal women aged 65-, 67-, and 71 in the Republic of Korea; however, no report of this disease has been reported in women older than 80. In this study, we would like to report an 80-year-old postmenopausal woman who did not previously complain of any symptoms, and was finally diagnosed with SST. She was involved in a traffic accident, and huge pelvic mass was found during the evaluation of intra-abdominal hemorrhage. Total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy was performed ; a final pathologic diagnosis reported SST.

Tropical cyclone rainfall rates have been projected to increase in a warmer climate. The area coverage of tropical cyclones influences their impact on human lives, yet little is known about how tropical cyclone rainfall area will change in the future. Here, using satellite data and global atmospheric model simulations, we show that tropical cyclone rainfall area is controlled primarily by its environmental sea surface temperature (SST) relative to the tropical mean SST (that is, the relative SST), while rainfall rate increases with increasing absolute SST. Our result is consistent with previous numerical simulations that indicated tight relationships between tropical cyclone size and mid-tropospheric relative humidity. Global statistics of tropical cyclone rainfall area are not expected to change markedly under a warmer climate provided that SST change is relatively uniform, implying that increases in total rainfall will be confined to similar size domains with higher rainfall rates.

[Purpose] This study investigated the intra-rater, inter-rater and test-retest reliability of the sideways step test (SST), its correlation with other indicators of stroke-specific impairment, and the cut-off count best discriminating subjects with stroke from their healthy counterparts. [Subjects and Methods] Forty-three subjects with chronic stroke and 41 healthy subjects older than 50 years participated in this study. The SST was administered along with the Fugl-Meyer motor assessment for the lower extremities (FMA-LE), the five-times sit to stand (5TSTS) test, the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), the movement velocity (MVL) by the limits of stability (LOS) test, the ten-metre walk (10mW) test, the timed “Up and Go” (TUG) test and the Activities-specific Balance Confidence (ABC) scale. [Results] The SST showed good to excellent intra-rater, inter-rater and test-retest reliability. The SST counts correlated with 5TSTS times, 10mW times, TUG times, and the FMA-LE and BBS scores. SST counts of 11 for the paretic leg and 14 for the non-paretic leg were found to distinguish the healthy adults from subjects with stroke. This thesis evaluates the nature and magnitude of tropical climate variability from the Last Glacial Maximum to the present. The temporal variability of two specific tropical climate phenomena is examined. The first is the position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) in the Atlantic basin, which affects sea surface temperature (SST) and precipitation patterns throughout the tropical Atlantic. The second is the strength of the Indian Monsoon, an important component of both tropical and global climate. Long-term variations in the position of the ITCZ in the Atlantic region are determined using both organic geochemical techniques and climate modeling. Upwelling in Cariaco Basin is reconstructed using chlorin steryl esters as proxies for phytoplankton community structure. We find that the diatom population was larger during the Younger Dryas cold event, indicating that upwelling was enhanced and the mean position of the ITCZ was farther south during the Younger Dryas than it is today. A climate simulation using an ocean-atmosphere general circulation model confirms these results by demonstrating that the ITCZ shifts southward in response to high-latitude cooling. The present work has evaluated the efficiency of an MSF system for treating supplying water on a pilot scale. A MSF pilot plant was located in the Water Treatment Station (WTS) area in Goianápolis- GO and fed by Sozinha stream. The plant was comprised of a dynamic prefilter (DPF) and a vertical upflowing pre-filter (VUF) in layers, both of them with different granular compositions; a slow sand filter (SSF); and a slow sand filter with activated carbon (SSFAC), which was called SEQ. 1. The second sequence of the trial, SEQ. 2, was comprised of a dynamic pre-filter (DPF) and a slow sand filter (SSF-2). The filtration rates in use were 24 and 48 m3/m2 a day for DPF, 12 e 24 m3/m2. day for APF; 3 e 6 m3/m2. day for SSF and SSFAC. The efficiency was evaluated by analyzing turbidity, apparent color, total suspended solids (TSS), as well as total thermo tolerant coliforms. Incluye Bibliografía; Resumen En este estudio se parte del axioma que el propósito de la formación es el aprendizaje y que el ambiente institucional lo puede acelerar o frenar. La pregunta sobre la que gira este trabajo es hasta qué punto el marco institucional en salud y seguridad en el trabajo (SST); ha sido un referente de aprendizaje individual y colectivo para la gestión de SST en las empresas en México. Se analiza brevemente la trayectoria institucional, haciendo especial énfasis en instrumentos novedosos que han emergido en años recientes. Confrontando con información cuantitativa en SST, se identifican alcances y límites, particularizando en la industria azucarera. Esto es un caso donde el aprendizaje en SST ha sido muy limitado, demostrando la complejidad para llegar a una política exitosa de formación en SST para el conjunto de las empresas del país, lo que contribuye a la discusión sobre los aspectos a focalizar en el diseño de las políticas.

Flow problems with moving boundaries and interfaces include fluid--structure interaction (FSI) and a number of other classes of problems, have an important place in engineering analysis and design, and offer some formidable computational challenges. Bringing solution and analysis to such flow problems motivated the development of the Deforming-Spatial-Domain/Stabilized Space--Time (DSD/SST) method. Since its inception, the DSD/SST method and its improved versions have been applied to a diverse set of challenging problems with a common core computational technology need. The classes of problems solved include free-surface and two-fluid flows, fluid--object and fluid--particle interaction, FSI, and flows with solid surfaces in fast, linear or rotational relative motion. Some of the most challenging FSI problems, including parachute FSI and arterial FSI, are being solved and analyzed with the DSD/SST method as a core technology. Better accuracy and improved turbulence modeling were brought with the recently-introduced variational multiscale (VMS) version of the DSD/SST method, which is called DSD/SST-VMST (also ST-VMS). Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited; During the period June 1991 to August 1993, 107 Argus-tracked drifters, drogued to 15 m depth, were released in the Greenland, Iceland, and Norwegian (GIN) Seas. The drifter movements revealed the strong and spatially confined current systems along the Iceland-Faeroe Front (IFF) and provided tracking of the Norwegian Atlantic Current and the general cyclonic gyre circulation in the GIN Sea. Of the 107 drifters released, 59 were selected for this study due to their proximity to the IFF. Tracked by the Argos system aboard the NOAA polar orbiters, the drifters provided accurate location and sea surface temperature (SST) data. Interpolated and low pass filtered position data were used to construct maps of drifter displacement and surface velocity field estimates and to study the correlation between drifter trajectories and satellite derived SST frontal features. Drifter SST data were compared to spatially and temporally coincident satellite retrieved SST data. The individual data sets were in good agreement with each other, resulting in a temperature difference of less than 1 deg C. Satellite imagery used to estimate surface currents through SST feature tracking provided a snapshot of the flow field over a short time scale. The drifters revealed a distinct frontal zone (IFF) where the topographically steered flow field approached velocities of 1 m/s. This relatively strong flow became unstable as it propagated eastward and an intense eddy field developed. What began as a stable demarcation between water masses became a flow field dominated by warm and cold instabilities and intrusions. The interannual relationship between the East Asian summer monsoon and the tropical Pacific SSTs is studied using rainfall data in the Yangtze River Valley and the NCEP reanalysis for 1951–96. The datasets are also partitioned into two periods, 1951–77 and 1978–96, to study the interdecadal variations of this relationship. A wet summer monsoon is preceded by a warm equatorial eastern Pacific in the previous winter and followed by a cold equatorial eastern Pacific in the following fall. This relationship involves primarily the rainfall during the pre-Mei-yu/Mei-yu season (May–June) but not the post-Mei-yu season (July–August). In a wet monsoon year, the western North Pacific subtropical ridge is stronger as a result of positive feedback that involves the anomalous Hadley and Walker circulations, an atmospheric Rossby wave response to the western Pacific complementary cooling, and the evaporation–wind feedback. This ridge extends farther to the west from the previous winter to the following fall, resulting in an 850-hPa anomalous anticyclone near the southeast coast of China. This anticyclone 1) blocks the pre-Mei-yu and Mei-yu fronts from moving southward thereby extending the time that the fronts produce stationary rainfall; 2) enhances the pressure gradient to its northwest resulting in a more intense front; and 3) induces anomalous warming of the South China Sea surface through increased downwelling...

O controle de qualidade de laranjas desde a colheita até a comercialização é realizado com base em análises físico-químicas. Todavia, estas análises são destrutivas. Neste cenário, sistemas não invasivos para aferir a qualidade, são alternativas promissoras. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar os métodos de análises não destrutivas como a Ressonância Magnética em baixo campo (RMN) e espectroscopias de infravermelho médio (MIR) e próximo (NIR), associadas à quimiometria, para analisar parâmetros de qualidade de laranjas de forma não invasiva. O experimento ocorreu na unidade da Embrapa Instrumentação em São Carlos, SP. Foram coletadas 470 laranjas, obtidas em cultivos comerciais no interior do estado de São Paulo. As frutas passaram pelas etapas de seleção, higienização e sanitização. Em seguida, foram submetidas à análise não invasiva pelos equipamentos de RMN, NIR e MIR. Os parâmetros de qualidade avaliados foram, massa fresca, diâmetros longitudinal e transversal do fruto, teor de sólidos solúveis (SST), pH, acidez total titulável (ATT), índice de maturação (ratio) e rendimento de suco. Para os sinais de RMN foi aplicada a suavização de Savitzky-Golay com largura de janela de 21 pontos. Seasonal variations of MERIS-derived chlorophyll-a concentration in the coastal waters of Côte d'Ivoire in relation to sea surface temperature and hydrography

Remote sensing data from MERIS are used to study the seasonal variations of the chlorophyll-a concentration (Chla) in the coastal region of the Côte d’Ivoire. A ten-year monthly climatology of Chla is described for the Ivorian coastal and offshore domain and analyzed with a similar climatology of sea surface temperature (SST) from the MODIS-Terra mission. The period of highest Chla values extends from June to October with a peak in August-September in association with the minimum values of SST occurring in the upwelling season. Spatially, the highest Chla values appear along the coast. Then the seasonal variations of Chla and SST in the coastal region are specifically analyzed at locations associated with hydrographic measurement stations at the mouth of four major Ivorian rivers. For the four rivers, the maximum of the flow is in September-October, slightly later than the SST minimum. This flow maximum is also close to the Chla peak for three of the rivers. Assuming a simple linear model, 64% to 81% of the variance in Chla can be explained by river flow and SST, with an importance of these two predictor variables varying between rivers. These results highlight the complexity of the Chla variations in these coastal regions and the usefulness of remote sensing techniques for understanding the local ecosystems.; JRC.H.1-Water Resources

Syntax-based Security Testing for Text-based Communication Protocols

We introduce a novel Syntax-based Security Testing (SST) framework that uses a protocol specification to effectively perform security testing on text-based communication protocols. A protocol specification of a particular text-based protocol under-tested (TPUT) represents its syntactic grammar and static semantic contracts on the grammar. Mutators written in TXL break the syntactic and semantic constraints of the protocol specification to generate test cases. Different protocol specification testing strategies can be joined together to yield a compositional testing approach. SST is independent of any particular text-based protocols. The power of SST stems from the way it obtains test cases from the protocol specifications. We also use the robust parsing technique with TXL to parse a TPUT. SST has successfully revealed security faults in different text-based protocol applications such as web applications and kOganizer. Tendo em vista que vários estudos indicam dificuldades psicossociais em pacientes com síndrome de Turner (ST), este estudo objetivou avaliar as habilidades sociais (HS) em uma amostra dessa população. Foram avaliadas 52 pacientes (15 a 35 anos), 33 irmãs de pacientes (16 a 43 anos) e 30 mães, com Inventário de HS (IHS-Del-Prette) e entrevista individual. Houve bom desempenho das pacientes no IHS-Del-Prette, semelhante às irmãs e com melhor desempenho das pacientes em um fator (auto-exposição a desconhecidos e situações novas) (p=0,020). As pacientes mais velhas obtiveram melhores resultados no IHS-Del-Prette em relação às mais novas, diferentemente das irmãs. As mães relataram mais problemas de relacionamento familiar e social por parte das pacientes do que das irmãs. Houve poucas queixas espontâneas de relacionamento interpessoal, porém a maioria das pacientes entrevistadas deixou transparecer dificuldades de cunho social. Esses resultados sugerem que tais dificuldades não chegam a causar problemas sociais significativos e a torná-las insatisfeitas com suas vidas sociais, ou mesmo que não são capazes de perceber suas próprias dificuldades. O bom desempenho na avaliação de HS sugere ainda que são capazes de identificar habilidades adequadas nos contextos analisados e responder de maneira a obter bons resultados...

Determinantes prognósticos em pacientes com síndrome coronariana aguda sem elevação do segmento ST

FUNDAMENTO: Em pacientes com Síndromes Coronarianas Agudas (SCA) sem Supradesnivelamento do Segmento ST (SST), sugere-se que uma série de marcadores (células inflamatórias, hiperglicemia e função renal) é capaz de identificar indivíduos com maior risco para eventos cardiovasculares. OBJETIVO: Avaliar o impacto desses parâmetros laboratoriais em desfechos intra-hospitalares de pacientes com SCA sem SST. MÉTODOS: Foram avaliados prospectivamente 195 pacientes admitidos consecutivamente com SCA sem SST. Foram registrados dados clínicos, demográficos e laboratoriais ao longo do período de internação no hospital, em relação à ocorrência ou não de eventos combinados. RESULTADOS: A idade média foi de 67 ± 12 anos, e 52% eram homens. Na análise da área sob a curva ROC, somente a razão neutrófilo/linfócito (AUC: 70%, IC95%: 56%-82%, p = 0,006) e a creatinina (AUC: 62%, IC95%: 50%-80%, p = 0,03) discriminaram aqueles pacientes com SCA sem SST que apresentaram algum desfecho.
