Maturity models describe the maturing of the use of information systems in organizations. They are a useful framework to describe an organization’s current position as well as a range of possible position in the future in terms of their e-business maturity. The relationship between Information Technology (IT) and e-business maturity is examined. We used a model of e-business maturity, Stages Of Growth for e-business (SOGe) model, to put an organization in a maturity stage. In our survey we presented a set of technologies and we asked to enterprises which of them are implemented, in development, planned or inexistent. We concluded that there is a strongly correlation between IT implementation and the e-business maturity.

The implementation of business rules in an information system is not an easy task. This happens because most of the models used to represent them capture only the meaning of the rules and do not provide means to make them to be effectively implemented. In this work we provide an approach for the translation from a SBVR semantic description of business rules into a implementation model. This was done by mapping all relevant elements of the SBVR semantic representation into a $\pi$-calculus event-driven model. On this model will be described explicitly all the events that must be monitored in order to identify when some rule may have been violated. This makes the business rule implementation easier because there is a explicit indication of the moment when make sense to do a verification in order to see if any rule was violated. Besides that...

peer-reviewed; Software systems are subject to change. To embrace change, the systems should be equipped with automated mechanisms. Business process and software architecture models are two artifacts that are subject to change in an interrelated manner that requires them co-evolve. As opposed to the traditional batch-based model transformation, we propose a comprehensive set of structural and behavioral evolution patterns that enable to incrementally reflect the impact of change of business processes to their associated architecture models by applying reusable patterns. A basis for automation is provided through a graph-based formalism.

This paper argues that the increased flow and management of knowledge permitted by knowledge-based capital, supported by appropriate policies, can be an important factor in reducing the decision risk facing enterprises due to uncertainty and imperfect information, helping improve the resilience of development outcomes. Enterprises are conceptualized as information platforms that manage risk through investments in knowledge-based capital and complementary assets, providing them with the knowledge, protection/enabling, insurance, and coping/leveraging abilities to make better decisions in response to shocks. Investments in knowledge-based capital allow enterprises to better convert voluntary but risky reallocation and innovation decisions into productivity and wealth-enhancing opportunities. They can help the enterprise sector as a whole and most people to self-protect and realize better jobs, earnings, and consumption outcomes by adapting to shocks. However, absent appropriate policies, knowledge-based capital can have adverse distributional effects -- including a skewed industrial concentration of productivity gains and more unequal consumption and income-earning outcomes between rich and poor people. The paper discusses the role of policy in facilitating risk management by enterprises...

The emergence of low-cost carriers (LCCs) has been a key catalyst for the development of the aviation industry in the last decade. Indeed, extensive research has been undertaken to analyze the business model and impact on the aviation sector and beyond. Despite recent developments in the LCC markets in Asia and Latin America, much of the research has been focused on developed countries. Therefore, the purpose of this book is to identify the premises and prerequisites of the LCC model, and assess whether this business model could be successful in other less-developed countries, in particular the countries of Sub-Saharan Africa. This book identifies various definitions that have been applied to describe the LCC business model. In essence the majority of researchers define LCCs as carriers which, through a variety of operational processes, have achieved a cost advantage over full-service carriers (FSCs). This cost advantage is, in most cases, translated to the consumers by a lower fare offering. Although many carriers are defined as LCCs...

This report represents the authors' efforts to provide a useful, albeit partial, understanding of the international defense marketplace - which we view as changing toward increasing complexity. In pursuit of that objective, we provide a brief overview of international defense markets in the context of both changes in military affairs and the various defense industrial bases. In analyzing the defense market, we essay multiple analytical frameworks (along the lines of Essence of Decision). Our analytical models are (1) a sophisticated view of offsets in a public policy context with market imperfections, (2) transaction cost economics with our unit of analysis being the nation-state instead of the firm, and (3) two standard corporate strategy models. To test the models? explanatory powers, we consider three ongoing cases: F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, the UK Defence Industrial Strategy, and the Northrop Grumman-EADS KC-30 proposal. Interestingly we find all three hypotheses have some explanatory power, but none of the three is demonstrably better than the others (in this small sample

In business science, the studied objects are often groups of partners rather than independent firms. Extending classical segmentation to these polyads raises conceptual problems, principally: defining what should be considered as common or specific at the partners' and at the segment levels. The general approaches consist either in merging partners characteristics and performances into a single macro-object, thus loosing their specific contributions to each partner's performance, or in modelling partners' performance as if their models were independent. As a step to understanding, how partnership influences firms' performance, the dyadic (i.e. two partners') case is studied. First, some theoretical issues concerning the degrees of individual and contributive interest in a dyadic population are discussed. Next, partnership's conceptualisation is based upon two models for each firm: a "self-model" that reflects how the firm's characteristics explain its own performance, and a "contributive-model" model that reflects how these characteristics influence the partner's performance. This allows definition of three relationship modes: merging, teaming and sharing. Subsequently, dyad segmentation strategies are discussed according to their capacity to reflect the modes of partnership and a dyadic clusterwise regression method...

Community organisations are a vital part of the Canberra Community that work to ensure basic human rights and set an acceptable standard of living for those in the community. Community organisations take on a majority of the community service responsibilities in the ACT illustrating the merits behind the provision of services via a community-based method as opposed to delivering services directly from the government. Additionally, community organisations provide a number of job opportunities in Australia, employing over half a million people in 2009. In 2005, the community service sector added substantially to the economy of Australia contributing approximately 3 per cent to the GDP. Aside from the social and economic arenas, community organisations also play a large role in increasing political participation of the community via lobbying, events, and the sharing of knowledge. Community organisations use funding models in order to run effectively and efficiently and to allocate resources in the most beneficial way. The main ways that community organisations receive funding include applying for tax exemptions, appealing for funds, obtaining a grant from government, foundations, or corporations and through earning funds from trading activities. Currently in the ACT...

A business incubator can play an important role in developing and supporting startup companies, and has the potential to stimulate local and regional economies. Incubation is a continuous relationship between the incubator and the early-stage entrepreneur, with graduation as the target and occurring when the early-stage company has reached sufficient maturity. Through the incubation process, the support provided by the incubator evolves along with the development needs of the business. Business incubation can be a valuable tool for stimulating the startup and growth of new enterprises. Successful incubators accelerate the growth of the clients' businesses as compared to new or small businesses operating independently. This assessment aims to provide further insights on the outcomes of business incubation for the enterprises directly served by the incubators, as well as for the broader socio-economic environment the business incubators operate in. This study assesses nine business incubators in eight countries across the Eastern Europe and Central Asia (ECA) region...

Lighting is a basic human need and, along with cooking, is a fundamental driver of fuel demand for low-income households in the developing world. Women and men without access to electricity typically rely on expensive, inefficient and hazardous lighting devices like kerosene lamps and candles to bring light to their homes and businesses. The annual spending for fuel based lighting worldwide approaches $40 billion, and a growing range of modern lighting products that incorporate innovative designs and business models are gaining market share. Modern off-grid lighting devices combine the latest advances in clean energy technology (for example, solar, LED, and advanced batteries) to provide a safe, efficient, affordable alternative to fuel based lighting. This report focuses on women's role in the expanding market for modern off-grid lighting. In the context of access to energy and lighting, the aim of this work is to identify whether there are any women-specific opportunities in the off-grid lighting market that could enhance product profitability while also improving lives.

Over the last decade, Brazil has pioneered an innovative model of branchless banking, known as correspondent banking, involving distribution partnership between banks, several kinds of retailers and a variety of other participants, which have allowed an unprecedented growth in bank outreach and became a reference worldwide. However, despite the extensive number of studies recently developed focusing on Brazilian branchless banking, there exists a clear research gap in the literature. It is still necessary to identify the different business configurations involving network integration through which the branchless banking channel can be structured, as well as the way they relate to the range of bank services delivered. Given this gap, our objective is to investigate the relationship between network integration models and services delivered through the branchless banking channel. Based on twenty interviews with managers involved with the correspondent banking business and data collected on almost 300 correspondent locations, our research is developed in two steps. First, we created a qualitative taxonomy through which we identified three classes of network integration models. Second, we performed a cluster analysis to explain the groups of financial services that fit each model. By contextualizing correspondents' network integration processes through the lens of transaction costs economics...

The effectiveness of the enterprise information technology areas is frequently questioned. Researches made by high credible entities show that most part of the information systems...

This thesis presents four business cases for delivering education services to the poor. All four business cases meet three fundamental criteria, namely, they are (i) focused on primary or secondary education for the poor, (ii) commercially viable and (iii) highly scalable. These four business cases were developed as part of my efforts to set up The Spark Group - an idea incubator that is focused on improving the quality of education at a grassroots level. The first business case is Spark Accreditation - India's first universally available school accreditation service. The second business case is Spark Guru - a comprehensive teaching service for Class 8, 9 and 10 Mathematics that promises to bring back teaching where it belongs - inside the classroom. The third business case is Spark TAT - India's first national teacher assessment test. And the fourth and most ambitious business case is Spark School-in-a-box - an idea to form ten-thousand, Rs. 100 ($2) schools.; by Ayan Sarkar.; Thesis (M.B.A.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, 2007.; Includes bibliographical references.

peer-reviewed; An important activity to maximize Business/IT alignment is selecting a software con guration that ts a given context. Feature models represent the space of software con gurations in terms of distin- guished characteristics (features). However, they fall short in represent- ing the e ect of context on the adoptability and operability of features and, thus, of con gurations. Capturing this e ect helps to minimize the dependency on analysts and domain experts when deriving a software for a given business and IT environment. In this paper, we propose contex- tual feature models as a means to explicitly represent and reason about the interplay between the variability of both features and context. We devise a formal framework and automated analyses which enable to sys- tematically derive products aligned with an organizational context. We also propose FM-Context, a support tool for modeling and analysis.
