In his elaboration of the concept of ‘reproductive citizenship’, Turner (Turner B.S., 2001. The erosion of citizenship. The British journal of sociology, 52 (2), 189–209) suggested something of a homogeneous accumulation of cultural capital to those who make a reproductive contribution to contemporary western societies. The present article takes up this suggestion and proposes that whilst reproduction is indeed a hallmark of contemporary citizenship, the cultural capital arising from this is still differentiated by mode of reproduction, with reproductive heterosex remaining the norm against which other modes are compared. This norm, it is suggested, produces what is termed here ‘reproductive vulnerability’, namely vulnerability arising from being located outside of the norm. Through an analysis of media representations of Australian people who have undertaken offshore surrogacy arrangements in India, this article demonstrates how reproductive vulnerability is highlighted only to be dismissed through recourse to the construction of those who undertake reproductive travel as agentic citizens. The article concludes by considering what it would take for an ethics of reproductive travel to exist; one in which multiple, incommensurable vulnerabilities are taken into account...

Feminist debates on sex trafficking have become entrenched and polarised, with abolitionists producing images of helpless abused victims, while sex worker advocates work hard to achieve some recognition of the agency of migrant sex workers. This article explores constructions of embodiment, subjectivity and agency in the debate, showing how abolitionist views, in spite of their efforts to challenge liberal pro-sex perspectives, rely on a familiar vision of the body as a singular, bounded and sovereign entity whose borders must be secured against invasion. The result is a vision in which victimisation is taken to epistemically compromise the subjectivities of sex workers, forcing them and their advocates to argue for recognition of their agency according to familiar liberal models of consent in order to be able to enter the debate. Drawing on the recent work of Judith Butler on consent and vulnerability, this article argues that what is needed is a rethinking of bodily ontology so that the vulnerability of sex workers is not opposed to their agency, but rather seen as an inevitable aspect of embodied sociality, constituting a call to ethical engagement and a recognition of the inequitable global distributions of precarity that produce sex trafficking as part of contemporary geopolitics. From this perspective...

The aim was to understand how violence is understood by the young, in their experience, in the perspective of corporeality and vulnerability. Qualitative research was undertaken with 21 young people, students of nursing at a university in the West of the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. The information was produced based on a genogram and ecomap, and on the dynamics of creativity and sensitivity, these being interpreted in the light of Hermeneutics. The young understand violence as an absence of happiness, as something which harms their integrity; by violence, they understand the negligence existing in the relationship between parents and children and in the conflictual relationships experienced in the family. The study raised important elements for understanding the violence from the viewpoint of the young person, revealing the need to outline actions of nursing care which reduce the situations of vulnerability to this phenomenon which interferes in their way of being in the world.

The following paper tries to approach the concept of child abuse and its perception by children in primary school. Therefore a theoretical review is provided and later a small sample is taken at a school of primary education in Cantabria to carry out a small-scale research by implementing a discussion group. With that discussion group we try to work out the children’s different perceptions on the topic and get their own suggestions to prevent situations of vulnerability and child abuse with the school’s participation. Finally the paper concludes with some reflexions based on the relationship between the theoretical reviews and the results obtained in the discussion group...

Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited; The purpose of this study was to determine whether Naval Medicine's current Information Assurance Policy and resultant efforts properly address federal requirements or current threats confronting Naval Medicine information technology professionals. The primary research was conducted with a survey instrument detailing thirty questions with various response categories. The findings of the survey questionnaire revealed the existing numbers of previously compromised systems were directly related to the frequency of vulnerability scanning and remediation practices in the current threat environment. This study will provide insight to anyone interested in the future assessment of Naval Medicine's information security posture. These findings have important implications for command personnel charged with the responsibility and accountability of Naval Medicine's networks and data systems, as well as other communities throughout the Navy.; Lieutenant, United States Navy

Thesis (Ph.D.) - Indiana University, School of Education, 2009; The current study utilizes data from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (Research Triangle Institute, 2002) to explore the moderating effect of infant emotionality (i.e., emotional intensity and negative mood) on maternal emotional support (i.e., responsivity and rejection) during early childhood predicting childhood levels of reactivity and effortful control. A primary aim of the current investigation was to determine if moderated effects were better accounted for by one of two explanatory models: gene-environment dual risk vulnerability or differential susceptibility. Predicting later levels of childhood reactivity, infants with high levels of emotional intensity were more vulnerable to maternal rejection than infants with low levels of emotional intensity. Predicting later levels of childhood reactivity and effortful control, infants with high levels of negative mood were more vulnerable to maternal rejection than infants with low levels of negative mood. The above findings are in support of gene-environment dual risk vulnerability. Findings are discussed in light of other results in support of differential susceptibility...

This book seeks to contribute to knowledge in two areas that are key to poverty reduction and social development: education and youth vulnerability. Specifically, the book focuses on the relationship between poverty, ethnicity, gender, and educational exclusion in four Northeast states in Brazil: Maranhao, Paraiba, Pernambuco, and Rio Grande do Norte; and in the Southeast state of Rio de Janeiro. Brazil has vigorously sought to expand the coverage and quality of education, and has achieved rapid results over the past decade. Progress has been achieved on important indicators, and the quality of education is now undoubtedly better than it was in the past. But social background, either as insufficient family income or low parental schooling, persists as a determinant of children's lagging educational achievement. Rural, indigenous, and Quilombola (descendants of fugitive slaves) students have precarious access to education, with schools often not offering the last four years of the mandatory eight in the fundamental cycle. Dropout and repetition rates remain key areas of concern for policymakers. Thus this book includes what youth think about themselves...

This study builds a profile of the status of poverty and vulnerability in Malawi. Malawi is a small land-locked country, with one of the highest population densities in Sub-Saharan Africa, and one of the lowest per capita income levels in the world. Almost 90 percent of the population lives in rural areas, and is mostly engaged in smallholder, rain-fed agriculture. Most people are therefore highly vulnerable to annual rainfall volatility. The majority of households cultivate very small landholdings, largely for subsistence. As a result, poverty is pervasive and not merely the situation of the lowest economic groups. Therefore, while this report focuses on the least-well-off sections of the population, the analysis provides valuable information to accelerate wealth creation and economic growth for the whole of Malawi. This synthesis report presents the main findings and policy recommendations stemming from the analysis. Due to the length and detail of this study, the 'full report' presenting the detailed analysis and results underpinning these policy recommendations is available as a separate publication. The present research analyzes the debate on the link between risk and future welfare presenting the theoretical underpinning of a new sound empirical framework for measuring vulnerability to poverty. It demonstrates that uninsured risk reduces household's well-being for the more exposed subsets of the population through its impact on the "ex-ante" household's behavior. Challenging the common view that looks at the coping and managing strategies as an optimal "ex-ante" behavior to reduce the potentially harmful consequences of risk, this work demonstrates (theoretically and empirically) that the risk-induced changing behavior actually has a cost in terms of welfare, especially for poor households in developing contexts. If it is the case, current monetary approaches to vulnerability to poverty lead to bias poverty prevention recommendations

Microcredit, a non-profit lending approach that is often championed as a source of women’s inclusion and empowerment, has in the past decade been followed by microfinance, a forprofit sibling of a different temperament. Microfinance in India is now in turmoil, precipitated by legislation in the state of Andhra Pradesh, which has encouraged withholding of payment, which in turn has frozen the market. This paper considers one precipitating condition of the crisis: the remarkable, new, and developing burden of formal economic debt that poor women in the state have only recently come to hold – debt that now surpasses one year’s family income, on average. The development of this lending sector follows upon innovation in lending to the poor of the global north over the past two decades, and the practices show noteworthy parallels. Both lending schemes have produced similar disproportionate burdens upon some low-status individuals within their respective economic orders, and both may exploit a vulnerability that is born of aspiration and produces great dysfunction for borrowers. This paper introduces the two lending schemes, sketches the parallels, and introduces the claim that ethical finance arrangements for the poor require attention to vulnerability...

This article examines how a group of tourists perceives health issues related to safety, prevention and health care during their travels. Objective: to characterize the profiles of families in the area covered by a Primary Health Center and to identify those in a vulnerable situation. Method: this is an epidemiological, observational, cross-sectional and quantitative study. 320 home visits were made, defined by a random sample of the areas covered by the Urban Center 1 in the city of Sao Sebastiao, in Brazil's Federal District. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection, elaborated based on the Family Development Index (FDI). Results: there was a predominance of young families, women, and low levels of schooling. The FDI permitted the identification of families in situations of "high" and "very high" vulnerability. The most critical dimensions were: "access to knowledge" and "access to work". Conclusion: the study indicated the importance of greater investments in the areas of education, work and income, and highlighted the need for the use of a wider concept of vulnerability by the health services.

Métodos - O estudo apresenta delineamento do tipo caso-controle.

Analytical and experimental research for determining the seismic vulnerability of ferrocement houses, which is a low-cost system using precast thin panels, is presented. The research comprises the following tasks: (a) a field survey on the ferrocement dwelling houses actually built in seismic regions in Colombia; (b) a cyclic load test on 1:1 scale models; (c) identification of the parameters of the Bouc-Wen hysteretic model for the observed panel behaviour; and (d) Monte Carlo simulations of models intended to estimate the fragility curves of the houses. Despite the models exhibiting stiffness degradation, it was concluded that the system is adequate for regions of moderate to high seismicity. © 2010 Taylor & Francis.

OBJECTIVE: As the world population ages with an improved quality of life and sexual longevity, the prevalence of AIDS is rising among the elderly. The purpose of this study was to estimate the vulnerability to AIDS among individuals attending senior community centers in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. METHOD: This descriptive, exploratory investigation included 329 subjects selected in a probabilistic manner. Individuals with scores on the Mini-Mental State Examination indicating cognitive impairment were excluded from the analyses. Barthel's and Lawton's functional assessment scales were applied. Interviews were conducted to evaluate the presence of cognitive and behavioral factors associated with HIV transmission. RESULTS: Most subjects were non-dependent, fell within the 60- to 69-year age bracket and were female. A majority of individuals reported having knowledge about AIDS and were aware that the elderly are vulnerable to the disease. More than a quarter (26.9%) of the sample reported previous HIV testing. No participants reported drug use, homosexual orientation, or alcohol abuse. A minority of participants reported using medication for erectile dysfunction. Casual and multiple partners accounted for 12% and 34% of reported intercourse experiences...
